From the match programme:-
"NOTES."
"With preparations already proceeding for the construction of a Grand Stand on their Ground, the Newbridge Committee considered their Ground unsuitable to accommodate the very large crowd which undoubtedly would have witnessed the game due to have been staged at Newbridge this evening. Wisely, therefore, they requested the Newport Committee to transfer the game to Rodney Parade. With ready response it was decided that, as with the Crosskeys game, transferred at the end of last season, the entire nett gate and proceeds from Programmes, should go to the Newbridge Club, and that with the match being treated as a Newbridge "home" game, all Newport Club Members and Season Ticket Holders should pay for admission."
"The advent of the Newbridge Club during and since the War has been a source of strength and encouragement to Rugby Football in Monmouthshire. The provision of badly needed Stand accommodation on their Ground will be an all important step in the short, but successful history of the Western Valley Club, and the anticipated large crowd at Rodney Parade this evening will ensure Newbridge of a financial return which may help considerably in their venture."
"In the one game played between the Clubs at Newport last season, Newport won by 8 points to nil. Don Hayward and his team may be relied upon to provide equally spirited resistance in the match tonight."
"After only three official matches (although Newport have, as usual, taken teams each week - sometimes twice in a week - to play "missionary" games in the Valleys), the injured list is growing. Although T. Sterry is fit to return for to-day's game, Bryn Williams, G. Ross, G. Hirst and Ken Jones are all out of the side through injury. It was hoped that the latter would be able to appear early in the season, but training last Tuesday proved that his foot, damaged in running, has not responded sufficiently to treatment and it may yet be some while before he is able to resume football."
"At the time of writing, therefore, the composition of the Newport team for this evening's game is doubtful, although both Glyn Davies and Malcolm Thomas have been selected for the centre positions. G. Hirst's place in the front-row will be taken by J. Blackborow, who will play his first game for Newport. This young forward has earned his place in the Newport side the hard way - graduating through both the Extras and United teams, and sound judges of forward play rate him as a Newport forward of the future, despite his present lack of inches and weight."
"Newport follow to-day's game with two very hard "away" matches - at Llanelly next Saturday, and the first of the season's clashes at Cardiff the following week. It will be noted in the Supporters' Club News on Page 7 that they are running a "7/6d. trip" to Llanelly next Saturday, so that Newport should have a large volume of encouragement where it is always greatly needed. One of the features of Newport's away matches last season was the constant support organised by the Supporters' Club. They are doing great work for Newport Rugby. "Support them to support your team" may well be the slogan for the season."
"The Abercarn and Newport United game, due to have been played at Newport on Saturday next, has been postponed. Abercarn agreed to this to enable Newport United to undertake a tour in France, where three matches will be played next week in the Dijon area."
"SUPPORTERS' CLUB NEWS."
"We call Supporters' attention to the fact that we want all the support we can get for our visit to Llanelly on Saturday next. The 'Scarlets' on their own ground are amongst our stiffest adversaries, and this season being strengthened by the great Lewis Jones, will be more formidable than ever. Our trip will only cost 7/6d., so come along and give your vocal support and help our boys preserve their record. Bus leaves the Club at 12.00 mid-day. Now come along to the Bowls' Pavilion after this game and book your seat. We always have a good time."
"On Thursday next, we have been given permission to stage a Whist Drive in the Gymnasium. Have you secured your ticket yet? Price 1/6d. from any Committeeman or at the Bowls' Pavilion. Good Prizes."
"A reminder. Our Canteen is available for your wants. Why not try us sometime? We can give you good light refreshments."
"Club cards are now available whereby you can pay a deposit on any of our trips. Don't forget our Annual Outing to the Wasps and our Devon Tour. Place your Deposits to-day."
"We are very pleased to report record sales of Badges, even at this early date. After one Home Match, we have already 850 people registered as members. This is certainly going to be a record year. We are pleased to report members as far afield as New Zealand, South Africa, Germany and many parts of Great Britain."
"Have you purchased yours? Do so before you are disappointed. We are past halfway already."
