From the match programme:-
"NOTES."
"The month of December, which brings Rugby to the season's half-way stage, will be a hard one for Newport players, and of greatest interest to the supporter. In the first place, Newport have a full programme of home matches. To-day, Bristol are entertained, on December 15th, the second Newport and Cardiff clash (kick-off 2.30) will be staged at Rodney Parade, while Plymouth Albion are here the following Saturday. The traditional Boxing Day match with the Watsonians will be followed by the first visit of the famous London Club, Rosslyn Park, on the next day, December 27th, and then Newport travel to France for their New Year Tour, which comprises matches against Cognac and Nantes. Wales open their International programme this month, and the teams for the final Trial at Cardiff a week to-day have been announced. While the latter is being played, the South Africans will be engaged with Ireland at Dublin, and the outcome of these two events - The Trial match and the International - will provide the 'hub-ub' of excitement prior to the Wales v. South Africa meeting at Cardiff on December 22nd."
"If Bristol supporters will permit us to say so, Bristol provided the earliest surprise of the season by very much holding Newport to a drawn game, 11 points all, in the opening match of the season al Bristol, on September 8th. If they are without County engagements, Bristol will certainly be bringing down their strongest side to try and improve on that result, while Newport, with but two defeats this season, will be determined to disprove that early season form. Bristol have not won at Newport since the War, and last season were defeated at Rodney Parade by 19 points to 6 - an unusually wide margin for Bristol and Newport meetings."
"Newport have selected at strength for to-day's game. Although the leg injury sustained by Glyn Davies last Saturday is not serious, he has not been considered for this match, and Bryn Williams will again come into the three-quarter line. In the forwards, young Jim Blackborow, after 10 games in the First XV, is rested to allow D. Whelan to come up to the front row, and L. E. T. Jones to resume his place in the second row. This selection is based providing that "L. E. T." is not required to travel in his capacity as reserve for the first English Trial match. Geoff Hirst will again give his injured leg a try-out with the United, in their game at Bristol, this afternoon. Incidentally, it was in the corresponding game for the United at Bristol, two years ago, that Hirst "played" himself into the Newport side, to retain an unchallenged position since."
"It is likely that the Newport Committee will be able to make an announcement at to-day's game regarding the disposal of Tickets for the "all-ticket" match against the South Africans, on January 10th. It has already been announced that members, holding a reserved seat in the Stand, will be able to retain their seat, upon payment, for this game."
"It should hardly be necessary, but some recent comment makes it advisable to refer to the disposal of Tickets for the Wales v South Africa game. The Stand and Enclosure Tickets were distributed by Ballot, and the Field Tickets were sold to members - one Ticket only on a Club Membership Card - as advertised, last Saturday afternoon. The stress must be on the fact that the total number of Tickets issued to the Newport Club for this game did not quite cover half the Membership of the Newport Club. While doing everything, therefore, to ensure the best possible distribution of the limited number of Tickets available, it was, of course, unavoidable that a considerable body of members be disappointed on this occasion."

"To-day's opposition, Bristol, are one of our nearest rivals, and consequently these meetings are always charged with that atmosphere found at local 'derbies.' We look forward to a hard game fought in good spirits."
