The new technology of "portable radios" had obviously made an impact, from the match programme:-
"NOTES."
"This is the period of the season when Club football has to vie with International and Representative matches which are, with the South African Tourists here, correspondingly heavier this year. To-day, England and Wales are engaged at Twickenham, next Saturday the Springboks play The Barbarians at Cardiff and depart for France, while on the following Saturday, Scotland play Wales - again at Cardiff Arms Park. But throughout these counter-attractions Club rugby must go on, and it is to be hoped that the distracting murmurs from portable wireless sets will be absent at Rodney Parade this afternoon when Newport entertain Coventry. This in itself will be a game full of interest and deserving of the undivided attention of spectators and players. Coventry are amongst the very strongest of English Clubs. After holding quite long to an unbeaten record they failed only narrowly against both Swansea and Cardiff, and come to Newport this afternoon with a record of 17 victories and 5 defeats, which is almost identical with that of the Newport Club. There is little doubt to-day's meeting should provide an extremely close and exciting game."
"Through International calls and injuries, Newport will, of course, be considerably below strength. Ken Jones and Malcolm Thomas are in the Welsh side, and W. A. Williams has travelled to Twickenham as reserve, while John Lane, Ben Edwards and R. T. Evans are out through injury. In their efforts to find the best possible substitute for the injured Newport captain, Hedley Rowland will be tried at wing-forward. Hedley is no stranger to this position which he filled adequately for Newport on several occasions a couple of seasons back. D. Whelan comes in for Ben Edwards, and an interesting switch in the forwards."
"SUPPORTERS' CLUB NEWS."
"Once again, after the excitement and hurly burly of last week, we can settle down to enjoy a normal match without strain."
"We are naturally disappointed that we did not beat the Springboks, but for once our backs did not show anything comparable to normal club form, but against Cardiff a tired team put up an excellent show; although "Big Ben" was sadly missed as a 'kicker.' Our best wishes for a speedy recovery, Ben; we miss your goals on the field and your company off it."
"We are closing the Annual Outing to the Wasps, next Saturday. Response has been very good, and we are assured of a good time."
