From the match programme:-
"NOTES"
"For the outstanding attraction of the season, the final match of the Easter against the famous Barbarians, Newport will, barring injuries over the holidays, be able to field at full strength. This will mean the return to the side of Garfield Owen, Bryn Meredith and Vic Leadbetteir to play against the Tourists, whom they have been assisting in the rest of their programme. And this would be an appropriate opportunity to extend congratulations to Bryn Meredith on his selection for the British Touring Team, who will leave for South Africa in June. He will carry the best wishes of all for a successful and happy Tour. This will be his last game of the season for Newport this afternoon, as in accordance with the directions of the Home Unions, no player selected for the Tour must take part in further Rugby this season after to-day."
"This will be the tenth post-war meeting between the Barbarians and Newport, and the fact that the famous Tourists have only won three of these previous nine games is proof of Newport's ability to rise to the occasion in this particular match. The Barbarians' last success was a narrow two points margin in 1953, and prior to that go back to 1949 for an even narrower one point success. It is true, though, that in this game which, above all others can provide all the delights of Rugby football, the result is of secondary importance, and there will be the warmest of welcomes for the "Ba-Bas" this afternoon, win or lose."
"The season is nearly over. Newport play their final home game of the season against Neath on Saturday and the following week go on their annual Devon Tour. But to wind up the season Newport again stage the Welsh Seven-a-Side Tournament on April 30th, when sixteen first-class Welsh sides will compete for the "Snelling" Trophy, held at present by Newport. The Newport Club have arranged no extra games for the extended week of the season up to May 7th."
