"NOTES"
"This afternoon Cambridge University defend their unbeaten record. The Light Blues have played nine games, drawing only one, having scored 185 points to 49 points against, averaging more than 20 points per game - truly a great attacking combination. Saturday last they scored six tries against Leicester, and on Wednesday trounced Gloucester to the tune of 37 points to 3 points, crossing the Gloucester line nine times. The West Country side beat Newport earlier in the season, but in defence of the mid-week failure it is fair to state that they were under strength. Nevertheless, the marked superiority of the Varsity side truly stamped them as a superb team."
"Last season, on this ground, Cambridge forced a draw, 3 points (dropped goal by Roy Burnett) to 1 try, and the season before at Cambridge, Newport lost by 15 points to 11 points. Varsity football has a particular style of its own, copybook passing, and fast intelligent forward play, besides adventurously turning defence into attack, so to-day in all probability they will exploit their traditional approach to the game. A good performance to-day should maks them favourites for the "Battle of the Blues"."
"Malcolm Thomas, Harry Morgan and Vic Leadbetter have been invited to play for Steele-Bodger's XV against them next week. This will be the Light Blues final test before meeting Oxford University. D. Greenslade has made 100% appearances to date. John Phillips, Vic Leadbetter and Doug Ackerman have each missed one game."
"Ken Jones is leading try scorer with five tries, and Norman Morgan has kicked eight penalty goals besides converting fifteen tries."
"The collection made at half-time last Saturday for the St. John Restoration Fund realised more than £80."
"SUPPORTERS CLUB NOTES"
"Last Saturday's fine win over Cardiff was the Club's 100th of the series, but they have still much leeway to make up on Cardiff's 117 victories. However, this second triumph has raised our hopes that this season will witness the realisation of a long-cherished ambition by recording the elusive four victories over our ancient foes of the Rugby field."
"On our present form, Cambridge will have to do exceptionally well to prevent our taking their record, but which ever side wins we are looking forward to a great game."
"If you have not yet purchased your badge, you should make sure of doing so to-day, as this is probably the last time they will be on sale at the entrances; they can also be obtained at the Canteen, where the staff is at your service with refreshments, cigarettes, etc."
"Will anyone wishing to go on the Annual Outing to the Wasps' match on March 10th please contact any Committee member for details. Paying-in cards are available, and may be obtained from the Chairman (Mr. G. Williams), or the Secretary (Mr. L. King)."
