15th October 1956 saw The Times report this game as follows:-
"NEWPORT EXCEL IN TEAMWORK"
"BLACKHEATH FAIL ON THE GOAL LINE"
"Blackheath 3 pts., Newport 21"
"The Newport Rugby machine was altogether too good for Blackheath, at the rectory Field. Five times during the match it functioned superbly, to produce three goals, a try, and a penalty goal to a penalty, kicked by Sharp. If one records that for long periods things were very even, Blackheath, indeed, sometimes holding sway, that is not to detract from the merit of the victory, but to recognize Blackheath's sterling effort."
"Still, matches are won by the ability of a team to sense the makings of a score and no less by the craft and teamwork necessary to get it. That was exactly where Newport excelled. Blackheath had their chances, with four penalty kicks in the first 21 minutes and when, twice during the first half, players got to the goal line but then failed to finish. They were a man short from the start, first Lewis retiring for 0 minutes for attention to a leg, and then Arnold, who had already been prominent, having to be carried off with a broken leg. The remaining seven, with a deficit of perhaps 20 stones, sometimes lost ground in the scrummages, but not too often lost the strike, while in the loose they were faster and in the rucks more nimble."
"Blackheath's best chances had come and gone and Newport's able pack had been playing well within themselves, while their backs were often at sixes and sevens when, with Newport's team momentum developing, there came an off-side 35 yards from the Blackheath goal and N. Morgan kicked their penalty. That started a storm and they scored again in 10 minutes, Herrera throwing a long pass to Burnett, from which H. Morgan got the try and N. Morgan converted."
"After half-time first Newport, then Blackheath held sway but it was N. Morgan, coming up to meet Burnett from behind a scrummage, who scored next. In the twenty-seventh and thirty-second minutes Blackheath temporarily crumpled, letting superior experience snatch tries by ord and Davidge, both of which N. Morgan converted although he had failed after his own try."
