"Welcome to the Usksiders"
"By THE EDITOR."
"The Cardiff Rugby Club extends a very warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of the Newport Rugby Club and hope that today's occasion will be marked with a worthy match, fit to hold its place with the many great matches played between the two clubs since they first met, way back in 1876."
"The first match between the clubs was a memorable one and today we come to the 255th official meeting of the two clubs. Cardiff hold a lead in the number of victories gained but this is no guide for future events. Every match between Cardiff and Newport starts off with both clubs having an equal chance. Indeed it is rare that either side goes into the match as favourites and both sides try harder to win this match than perhaps any other match except against touring teams."
"There is a special atmosphere about these matches; one of tremendous endeavour and honesty of purpose. There are no two clubs in the world that can match Cardiff and Newport for their healthy rivalry and the officials and followers of both clubs hope that such an atmosphere will long endure."
"Our visitors from Newport have lost only one match this season out of ten played, and while it is reported that they have not shown their traditional form, they have not yet been beaten by Welsh opponents. Cardiff, on the other hand, have remained unbeaten in 15 official matches and two floodlit matches, scoring nearly 300 points and are enjoying one of their most successful seasons since 1947-48. However, though determined to win Peter Goodfellow and his fellows realise that they face their hardest match of the season so far, and it is a great tribute to the Newport club that they can present such determined opposition on the Cardiff Arms Park."
"Newport have a fine pack of forwards and can claim that they are the best drilled "eight" in Wales. Behind the scrum they are experimenting with players in various positions but the strength of the side is proved by the fact that six of its members were in last Saturday's First Welsh Trial at Rodney Parade. Leighton Jenkins, the Welsh back-row forward, is a doubtful starter through injury while Gordon Wells has had to withdraw from the Cardiff side owing to a shoulder injury."
"C. L. Davies makes a welcome reappearance at the Cardiff Arms Park to mark his fellow international, Ken Jones. Alan Friday, now back in the side, will meet another terrific goal-kicker in Norman Morgan at full-back for Newport, since both men have already scored over 50 points this season."
"A word of welcome too, for Mr. Ivor David, the referee, who has handled so many of these clashes during his long career."
"Next week the Western Mail publishes a special series of articles dealing with the six leading clubs in Welsh rugby. On Wednesday, Cardiff will be the subject of a special article and on Friday, Newport."
"Make sure you obtain your copies of the Western Mail on these days to read about the greatness of two of the World's outstanding rugby clubs."
