From the match programme:-
"NOTES."
"The quip "long time no see" could well apply today, because it will be almost five weeks since Newport played at home."
"Our visitors from the Western Valley have had shocking luck with injuries this season, but have always endeavoured to play bright football. Two weeks ago they met Bristol at Newbridge and thoroughly deserved a 14 pts. to 8 pts. victory, and last Saturday repeated the dose to another Gloucestershire side - Cheltenham, winning 10pts to nil. On Monday last they defeated Abercarn 3pts to nil. They have not tasted the fruits of victory often this season, but now they undoubtedly have their tails up and will be out to finish the season on a high note - the same time hoping to avenge their heavy defeat last year. During college vacation periods they can call on an abundance of talent and this week-end they hope to field strong XV’s for all their games."
"Next Monday against London Welsh, the kick-off will be at 11 a.m."
"The Barbarians game on Tuesday is a 4 p.m. kick-off. A curtain-raiser has been arranged. The invincible Newport Schoolboys XV will oppose Swansea Schoolboys. The Newport boys have averaged over 20pts per game. They have also reached the final of the Dewar Shield, and must meet Neath Schoolboys home and away, with the side having the highest aggregate of points holding the shield for one year. A unique honour has also come their way in the selection of two of their players to lead Wales. Roger Lockyer skippered the side against England at Cardiff and Peter Sanders last week-end did likewise against another England XV at Torquay. During the half-time break on Tuesday a collection will be made for the Newport Schools Rugby Union. Please give generously to help run this Town team. Their masters are very proud of them and so are we."
"The Baa-Baas have named 32 players for their Easter Tour of South Wales. They play the traditional games:- Penarth (yesterday), Cardiff (to-day), Swansea (Monday), and of course here on Tuesday. Cliff Morgan was injured at Llanelly so is doubtful, and so is J. Faull of Swansea who sustained a leg injury in the French game at Arms Park. Only seven of the party have not been capped by their country:- H. J. Mainwaring (full-back - London Welsh), D. Glass (three-quarter - Belfast Collegians), B. Jones (three-quarter - Newport), G. I. Low (forward - Watsonians), J. D. Nelson (forward - Cardiff), S. H. Wilcox (forward - Oxford University), and D. C. Manley (forward - Exeter)."
"Congratulations to Brian Jones on his selection to the exclusive Barbarians. Malcolm Thomas is also in their party, and it is hoped the Baa-Baas will release the Newport pair for the game here on Tuesday. Yet another honour has been bestowed on Malcolm Thomas, he is named in the Barbarians party to do a short tour - South Africa next month."
"On April 19th a German Youth XV will oppose a Welsh Youth XV on this ground. The usual Newport prices will apply."
"Newport will be defending the Snelling Trophy in the Welsh Seven-a-Side Tournament at Cardiff on April 26th. The opening game commences at 12.45 p.m."
