"NOTES."
"GROUP CAPTAIN “ RANJI ” WALKER’S XV"
"It was in 1949 that “Ranji” Walker first brought a side to South Wales. Swansea were their sole opponents. In 1952 Llanelly were added and last year Newport. On this tour, which commences here tonight, they will face Cardiff, Swansea and Llanelly. For four years, 1951-1954, a side was taken to Harrogate, and from 1954 an Irish trip was included. The “Emerald Isle” opposition came from Dublin Wanderers, Dolphin and Galwegians."
"J. P. Horrocks-Taylor (Cambridge U. and England), will partner at halfback, S. J. McDermott (London Irish and Ireland). They played together last Monday at Stradey Park for George Williams’ XV. Arthur Smith (Gosporth, Cambridge U. and Scotland) will skipper the side. His reputation is second to none among present day wings and should the ball run his way tonight we shall have to police him well and truly."
"Invitations to tour with this party often go to promising young players, who generally are not known in South Wales. The only Welshman is J. Dobb Cardiff and R.A.F.. The others come from the North, the Metropolis, the Universities and Ireland."
"The Newport side shows only one change from last Saturday, Bernard Glasson has returned to Devonport for a few weeks and Roy Burnett suffered a rib injury at Twickenham, so on the left wing tonight will be seen Jack Hurrell. Jack who is usually a mid-field player showed excellent form in the Trials and last Saturday when playing for Ken Jones’ XV was outstanding."
"It will be noticed that the stand, railings and barriers have been newly painted. Excepting the high work in the stand, all this was done by the Committee and enthusiastic members. The money saved by this effort was nearly offset by the claim of a former Chairman that during the opening Trial of the season the green from the seats in the stand got attached to his suit. A panel of experts have proved the claim false and state that the suit was “ green with age.” "
"Season Tickets are still available, Field £1/0/0, O.A.P. 10/- and Enclosure £1/10/0, O.A.P. 17/6."
"The Supporters’ Club are arranging a trip for our first away game at Swansea, September 27th. A coach will leave this ground at 1 o’clock sharp, fare 8/6. Please contact the Canteen or any member of the Committee who will be at the entrances selling badges, if you wish to make this trip."
