From the match programme:-
"NOTES."
"It is early in the season to finalise judgment on the new rules. Undoubtedly the game has been faster and therefore more spectacular, but the real advantages will be seen when the players have really accustomed themselves to the new rulings. In the two opening games players were seen "playing the ball with the foot" before picking up, which proves that only time can erase this now obsolete rule. A wag was heard to comment on these incidents by saying "last season they would in all probability picked up without doing the necessary playing with the foot." When the ground becomes heavier later in the season the new rules should be the means of more open play, with a great reduction in stoppages."
"Ranji Walker’s XV opened their Welsh Tour with two resounding victories - Newport and Cardiff. This side with a minimum of stars blended with well recommended up and coming players have shown the rugby public a brand of rugger we should be sorry to lose. It is doubtful if we shall have the pleasure next year because of the ban on so called "scratch XV"."
"Bristol cross the Severn to do battle with us to-day. Last season they shared the honours - Newport winning at home 13 points to 6 points and Bristol victors at the Memorial Ground 8 points to 3 points. Last Saturday they beat Neath 11 points to 6 points at Bristol."
"Roy Burnett is still suffering from bruised ribs received at Twickenham last Saturday. We wish him a speedy return to fitness and look forward to seeing him very soon."
"Geoff Whitson has a badly bruised shoulder and will be out for some weeks."
"The only alteration in the Newport team from last Wednesday’s XV is that Brian Cresswell moves around the scrum to take Geoff Whitson position and Ian McJennett takes over the blind-side."
"Next Saturday, we are home to Neath."
"NEWPORT RUGBY SUPPORTERS’ NOTES."
"In avenging last season’s defeat by Penarth, Newport made a better start to this season; but on Wednesday Ranji Walker’s XV again proved too good. However, this was a fine, entertaining game, the result being in doubt right up to the last few minutes when the tourists scored from a brilliant interception. It will no doubt be generally conceded that our opponents merited their victory, Newport’s passing being very erratic on time."
"Bristol, to-day’s visitors, may be expected to provide the usual hard game, especially forward, but Wednesday’s encounter should have keyed up the home side sufficiently, at least, for them to hold their own."
"The new Badges are on sale (2/6 each) at all entrances, and we should like you to obtain one as soon as possible. We shall be pleased to re-enrol all our old members, and heartily welcome any new. Blazer badges arc also available at £1. 12. 6.; a permit from the Secretary, Mr. L. King, is necessary to obtain these."
"Please remember that the Rugby Supporters’ Club runs the Canteen on the grounds, and your patronage will be much appreciated. The profits, in the same way as those from badge sales, enable us to carry on the good work of assisting schoolboy, youth and junior teams."
"A trip will be run on Saturday, 27th September, to Swansea, fare 8/6. Names of those wishing to book a seat in the coach can be given to any committee- member or to the Chairman, Mr. G. Williams at the canteen."
