From the match programme:-

"NEWPORT"

"Captain :   BRYN  MEREDITH."

"Our visitors to-day are our old friends from Newport, who in spite of losing some of their star players such as Ken Jones, Leighton Jenkins and John Phillips can still be relied upon to provide first class opposition at all times."

"The famous Usksiders are always welcome at St. Helens and we can look forward to the usual stern struggle with Rugby at its best. Bryn Meredith's two seasons popular captain seems to be playing as well as ever and getting the best out of the Newport pack."

"Whilst it would be invidious to mention individuals in the Whites' convincing victory against Llanelly on Thursday, I think we should mention the part played by our skipper Bryan Richards who treated us to a superb display. The pack, as expected, played magnificently and we will repeat, that it will take a good pack to master the Whites' eight as they are playing now."

"This latest victory over Llanelly must only spur our boys to greater efforts and given the usual good fortune, we could well enjoy one of our best seasons for years."

"With the support of our experienced players the newcomers seem to be gaining confidence with every game and we must all be very pleased with the  Rugby provided so far this season."

"Llanelly v. Swansea at Stradey, October llth :"

"Supporters' Club 'buses will leave Alexandra Road at 1.45 p.m. Members are asked to reserve their seats as soon as possible and thereby ensure the maximum support for the Whites in this important game between the " Best in the West."  "
