From the match programme:-
"NOTES."
"The English club sides this season have secured many scalps from the Welsh. Until last Saturday we were among the victims and had bowed the knee thrice. The excellent win over Gloucester was a tonic and this afternoon we shall be all out to maintain this form, with the added incentive of keeping the model Wasp in its place of honour in the Social Club. Our visitors from Sudbury, who by the way run thirteen XV’s every Saturday, are one of the strongest club sides in the Metropolitan area. This season out of seven games played they have won 6, and lost 1, with 138 pts. for and only 39 pts. against. Last Saturday they defeated the strong Irish club Belvedere by 13 pts. to 9 pts. They have been regulars on our fixture list since the war. In 1945/46 season only one game was played but since then two games per season have been the practice. The game in London was cancelled during 1951/52 season because the ground was waterlogged. There have been no drawn games. In 1949/50 we were defeated on this ground 11 pts. to 3 pts., but reversed the score when we travelled up to London. In 1952/53 we won here 17 pts. to nil but went down 8 pts to nil at Sudbury, and of the remaining games, always after a hard battle we have managed to come out on the winning side."
"Many of our key players this season have had nasty injuries. Last week Roy Burnett and Glyn Davidge had a successful run out with the United after being off for a long period, but to carry on our misfortune Gethin Evans is now on the injured list. Malcolm Thomas comes in form the wing to partner W. Watkins and B. Glasson re-appears on the flank."
"Fifteen Monmouthshire players are selected for the first Welsh Trial next Saturday, Pontypool and Newport each with six and Abertillery with three."
"The Newport contingent of Messrs. Nick Carter, Bryn Williams, Malcolm Thomas and Ron Tovey upheld the Black and Amber when they vanquished Swansea in the quiz "Make your Mark" on the Home Service, Thursday evening. This is a progressive knock-out series, so they now go forward to the next round. Next Wednesday, we shall be at Pandy Park to play Crosskeys in a friendly floodlight game, and on Saturday journey further up the Western Valley to oppose Abertillery."
"NEWPORT RUGBY SUPPORTERS' NOTES."
"Supporters were well pleased last Saturday with the excellent display against Gloucester, today we expect the second victory of the season over an English side, although our very welcome visitors "Wasps," usually provide tough opposition, present form however indicates that the "Trophy" will remain for a further spell at the N.A.C."
"Mr. A. Paul, the organiser, will be pleased to receive bookings for Abertillery (November 1st) immediately, coach leaves the Club at 1.45 pm., fare 3/9, return directly after the game. Also he would like names as soon as possible of those wishing to go on the "Annual Outing," to Leicester on Saturday, February 14th, full details will be published in these notes later. Paying-in Cards can be obtained from the Secretary, Mr. L. King."
"Badges can still be obtained, at the gate, or the Canteen."
