"NOTES."
"University rugger has a style of its own, being fast, bright and imaginative. These students are the pick of the English and Welsh Universities (Oxford and Cambridge excepted), are no strangers to first-class football. Most have represented their home clubs and counties, and they have produced many internationals. Ken Jones and Leighton Jenkins are two that come to mind. The current English outside-half Beverley Risman is included in the side. He played a grand game here last season, when the U.A.U. XV played us to a draw 3 pts. each. He was invited to play in a Welsh trial this season but declined in favour of an English trial. He performed soundly for England a few weeks ago at Arms Park in the quagmire."
"Alun Pask of Abertillery has been a strong candidate for the Welsh team for the last two seasons, and after a storming display for Monmouthshire last Wednesday his chances of getting into the Welsh pack should now be particularly bright."
"Wednesday's floodlit game with the Royal Navy was unfortunately spoilt by the fog. Malcolm Thomas played successfully at outside-half and again partners W. Watkins for to-day's match. Gwyn Lewis moves from the second row to allow for the return of John Herrera, to the back row, because Glyn Davidge received a face injury during the mid-week game. Colin Cobley comes back to prop, so making up the regular front row trio."
"The precaution of covering the ground was fully justified. The pitch was in excellent condition for the R.N. game and the straw was immediately replaced at the close of play."
"The Welsh team has been picked en bloc, so Ian Ford gets his second "cap." Bryn Meredith is almost a fixture but nevertheless we congratulate both of them."
"Next Thursday we play Oxford University on this ground."
"NEWPORT RUGBY SUPPORTERS' NOTES."
"Newport, as a fitting farewell, at least for a while, to Richmond, gave a fine display, and had the backs matched the excellent forward play, the score would undoubtably have been much more than 8-0."
"They also did well on Wednesday, under the floodlights, to defeat the "Royal Navy" 16-3, but the fog spoiled it from the spectators point of view, it was however, very pleasing to find Malcolm Thomas in such good form, after his enforced lay-off."
"To-day's visitors include some very distinguished players, most interest will probably centre on Bev Risman, England's new outside-half, but on present form we are expecting another victory for the home side."
