From the match programme:-

"NOTES."

"In less than a week we are privileged to see the cream of University rugger. Last Saturday the U.A.U. gave us a sample of how students approach this learned game. To-day the Dark Blues, always great favourites here at Rodney Road, will undoubtedly play their traditional game. Varsity rugby is hard and fast, and the style is regarded as copy-book. They never fail to serve up top-class rugby and we look forward to an exhilarating afternoon. They have supplied scores of players to the four national XVs. They will field a strong side to-day, and in M. S. Phillips, an Old Blue and England player, they have a centre-threequarter as dangerous as any      in present day football. A. O’Connor and D. Davies were both candidates for the Welsh team this season."

"The Newport team will be without Bryn Meredith, Ian Ford and Norman Morgan, who should be on their way to Scotland. The last named is reserve full-back, and we congratulate him on his selection as such. G. Bevan who always so ably hooks when Bryn is absent will again deputise, and Gwyn Lewis will fill Ian's place in the second row. Gethin Evans who is no stranger to the full-back position will take over Norman's place. Jack Hurrell is a doubtful starter. He injured his ribs last Saturday, but the very capable John Anderson is standing by and if the chance comes to him he will seize it with both hands. Glyn Davidge who had to stand down last Saturday after a facial injury received in the floodlit match with the Royal Navy is not certain to be fit. Should he not play, B. Hodson will occupy his position in the back row of the scrum."

"On Saturday we journey to Ebbw Vale. There is a possibility of an early kick-off so that interested spectators and of course the players can have a armchair view of the Murrayfield battle."

The Times of 6th February 1959 reported the game as follows:-

"THOMAS INSPIRES NEWPORT"

"NINE TRIES AGAINST OXFORD"

"Newport 35 pts, Oxford University 8"

"Although, on the face of it, it might seem an improbable marginal distinction between  the sides to have produced so marked a difference - four goals and five tries to a goal and a penalty goal - in the number of points  each managed to score, for a long time it was simply that Newport's back row forwards were extremely good while Oxford's were not."

"As try followed try the Oxford side lost heart, but in the beginning it had been Oxford's inability to find a way past the Newport mid-field defence, and their even greater inability to do anything about Thomas, which led to their defeat. There was more running with and passing of the ball than is usually seen in a month of matches, and each of Newport's nine tries - four were converted by G. Evans - were the consequence of back play."

"Then, from a scrummage on the Oxford 25, Newport heeled and Thomas, taking Watkin's long pass, side-stepped two men and ran straight to the line. Before half-time another three tries had come, one from a fine run by Burnett which gave Jones his first try. The next two were Thomas's work, the first being touched down by him after selling a dummy; next he kicked ahead and Bevan was over."

"So it went on, Thomas, immaculately served by Watkins, tormenting the Oxford defence to create opening after opening with the rest of the side backing up superbly, and that more tries were not scored was due partly to strong tackling by the Oxford centre three-quarters. Tries in the second half were scored by C. Lewis (two), Burnett (two), and Jones. Baxter scored a try for Oxford and Green converted, and he also kicked a penalty."
