From the match programme:-
"NOTES."
"Although we can face to-day's game with a certain confidence having already notched two victories over our near neighbours, we must not lose sight of the fact that Rodney Road has been a happy hunting ground for Cardiff since the war. Since the 1945/46 season (13 seasons) 26 games have been fought out here and on only four occasions have the Blue and Blacks returned empty handed, having won 15 and drawn 7. On present form we are favourites, and Bryn Meredith will urge his men on for another win, and so be a step nearer to the elusive four victories in a season."
"A. Priday who so strongly challenged Terry Davies for the Welsh full-back position returns to the Cardiff 1st XV to-day after a lapse of form. Ian James the star Abertillery and Trials outside-half has applied for a transfer to Cardiff, and if the necessary formalities are completed in time it is possible that he will be on view to-day, because the ambiguous A. N. Other was selected to partner Lloyd Williams. Harry Morgan who has given such loyal service to Newport has also expressed a desire to join Cardiff. We wish him luck with his new club."
"Norman Morgan has missed 10 games through injury and trial calls, but has still managed to score 87 pts. His form has been top-rate and his selection as travelling reserve full-back to Murrayfield was just reward."
"The Newport wings are proving their worth as try scorers. Clive Lewis has crossed the line on 22 occasions in 26 games and Roy Burnett has 8 tries in 15 games. Roy is gradually creeping up on George Boots' record and during the Easter games he should achieve the appearances record for the club. Malcolm Thomas' wife presented him with a son on Sunday. They already have a daughter."
"Next Wednesday evening a floodlit game will be played here against Bristol. The West Country side beat us on this ground early in the season and we returned the compliment at the Memorial Ground. On Saturday next we shall be under floodlights again. Blackheath were quite willing to play the game in the evening, because of the counter attraction in the afternoon of the England v France game on Television."
"NEWPORT RUGBY SUPPORTERS’ NOTES."
"A win of 19-3, at Leicester, was a fine performance, the forwards were well on top of the home eight, and the backs also were well in the picture, and Norman Morgan was at his best, scoring ten of the points."
"Congratulations to Bryn Meredith on his great hooking at Murrayfield, Ian Ford also played his part very well. On present form the boys should be able to notch a third win over our great Cardiff rivals, but from past experience we know that form is often greatly misleading in this series of games, however we hope, that whatever the result, the game will be one we can look back on with pleasure, that it will be hard, fast and vigorous, we have no doubt, may the best side win."
"Please note that the next, and final, trip of the season will be to Gloucester, on Saturday, April 18th. The fare is 9/-, and it is hoped we can arrange a Social Evening after the game, further details will appear in these notes at a later date. Please book as soon as possible, with any of the Committee, or at the Canteen, on the grounds."
