From the match programme:-
"NOTES."
"The Barbarians as usual complete their South Wales tour here to-day after having already met Penarth, Cardiff and Swansea. They never disappoint us, and always serve up delightful rugby. Their party is exceptionally strong although for their last two games they could not include any Welshmen due to be on duty in Paris next Saturday. Given favourable conditions they will be out to exploit their skill and speed to prove that adventure is a hazard that favours the brave."
"Early last season they broke new ground by playing in Ulster, and later they flew to South Africa where they engaged in five memorable games. They also played one game in East Africa winning by a colossal margin. Malcolm Thomas and Brian Jones were included in their South Wales and African parties. It is now customary to end any touring sides programme with a game against the Baa-Baas so Australia were met at Arms Park in February. The Fourth Wallabies were gallant losers, but the result was not the main issue because the game was played in the traditional way expected. N. Shehadie the veteran Australian forward played for the Barbarians, truly a magnificent gesture and in keeping with the Baa-Baas policy."
"Last year we won a notable game 13 pts. to 8 pts. This match was Ken Jones' swan-song before his home crowd."
"The Wales v France game next Saturday has forced us to re-shuffle our first choice team because of the selection of Bryn Meredith, Malcolm Thomas, Billy Watkins, Jack Hurrell, Glyn Davidge (reserve) and Norman Morgan (reserve). Nevertheless our choice is not limited because we have available experienced substitutes who are all first team material. We are in no way dismayed, and maybe we can be forgiven for being a little self satisfied and so very proud of the talent in our United XV. Our congratulations to Bryn Meredith and Malcolm Thomas on their seection for the British Lions Tour of Australia and New Zealand. This is our last opportunity to wish them an interesting and enjoyable tour."
"Assuming that Roy Burnett played last Saturday and yesterday and turns out to-day he will be making history by sharing the appearances record with George Boots. Roy could not have picked a better game to add another achievement to his remarkable career."
"The Welsh Secondary Schools XV will be playing England on April 4th at Cardiff. The excellent rugby played by these boys is worthy of more support."
"As a curtain raiser to to-day’s game Newport Schoolboys will be playing Rhymney Valley Schoolboys. The local boys reached the semi-final of the Dewar Shield but were beaten by Mountain Ash."
"Next week-end we shall be off on our Devon Tour."
"On Saturday, April 25th the Welsh Seven-a-Side Tournament will be staged on this ground. Sixteen teams will be competing for the Snelling Trophy. Admission prices are Stand 5/-; Inside Ropes 4/-; Enclosure 3/- and Field 2/-. There will be Buffets and Bars on the ground."
"Members are reminded that they can take-up their reserved seats by applying to the Club Office by April 8th."
"Although we have six more games (including the re-arranged Ebbw Vale match) they are all away from home, so to the players we say "Thank You" on this our last home game, for a delightful season."
"NEWPORT RUGBY SUPPORTERS' NOTES."
"After several away games, Newport will be home for the Easter matches, and we shall be pleased if they return to winning form, for although playing well, they could only draw with Cardiff, Wasps and Llanelly. With yesterday’s game against London Welsh and today’s with the famous Barbarians, we should have a fine finish to the home programme."
"We shall be pleased to take bookings for the coach trip to Gloucester on Saturday, April 18th. Leave N.A.C. 1.30 p.m. Fare 9/-, After the game it is proposed to stop for tea at the Swan Hotel, Alveston, where a social evening is being arranged. Names can be given to any of the Committee or to the Canteen Staff on the Grounds."
