From the match programme:-
"Last Saturday Newport defeated Penarth by 25 points to 5, and Bristol won at Neath by 18 points to 11 - to-day’s Memorial Ground contestants therefore both starting 1959-60 in promising style. Newport are, for the time being, deprived of the services of M. C. Thomas and B. V. Meredith who are with the luckless "Lions" in the Antipodes and the versatile R. Burnett has retired."
"The Usksiders, however, have very capable replacements for those well-known players and Bristol will be fully tested by the famous Monmouthshire side. Last September Bristol won at Rodney Parade by 14 points to 13, and Newport were successful at the Memorial Ground in December by 9 points to 6."
"John Blake and David Hazell were very pleased with their teams' performance at The Gnoll and are looking forward to another good season!"
"Our United XV also did well last week and it appears that Wynne Jones will again lead a very good team."
"This afternoon the Bristol Schools' Rugby Union are making their annual Memorial Ground collection. Last season the schools were very unlucky as their collection was to have taken place during the Cardiff match which had to be postponed. When the match was re-arranged, the attendance was very much affected by heavy rain and your generous support to-day will be doubly welcome."
"Our First XV's next home fixture will be Cheltenham on Monday, 21st September. Kick-off 6 p.m."
"The County Championship Match - Gloucestershire v. Devon will be played at the Memorial Ground on Saturday, 14th November. Kick-off 2.30 p.m."
