"NOTES."
"Swansea are always welcome to Rodney Road, and this season they have more than their usual glamour, because up to and including last Saturday they have emerged victorious from their five games played. Ignoring our inept display last Saturday we are pinning our faith on the form produced at the Memorial Ground, so with Swansea also boasting this famous West Country scalp (also by a large margin), speculation is rife on today's outcome. Swansea had a date with Llanelly on Thursday but unfortunately, at the time of going to print the result was not known. Should the "All Whites" still be unbeaten they will be all out to maintain their success and on the other hand if they have blotted their record they will undoubtedly try to regain any lost prestige, so in any case we face a stiff task. In D. Parkhouse, a diminutive full back they have an adventurous attacking bag of tricks and their threequarters include D. Bebb, the flying Welsh wing and H. J. Mainwaring, who has often played on this ground for the Barbarians. His versatility is well known having played for the Royal Navy and the Baa-Baas at full back, centre threequarter and wing forward, and amongst his accomplishments is the gift of accurate place kicking. Brian Richards at outside half is an evasive runner and has been for some seasons a strong contender for the Welsh team. N. Gale is a hooker with few peers and when Bryn Meredith was ill in the early part of last season he was tipped for his cap. Alongside him is the famous W. O. Williams and trialist Gwyn Lewis. Gordon Morris who skippers the side from the second row is no stranger to us and his displays when wearing the Black and Amber are still fresh in memory. The blond J. Leleu, ex London Welsh and Wales is a devastating wing forward. We show a few changes from last Saturday John Anderson coming in for John Roblin, John Herrera now fit replaces R. Hodson who has returned to college and Geoff. Whitson recovered from his Bristol injury takes over from B. Danahar. Jack Hurrell and Billy Watkins, our two Welsh caps are playing for the United today and it is reasonable to believe that they will challenge again for their 1st team places."
"Last season on the Welsh Programme a quiz called "Make your Mark," proved highly entertaining. Cliff Morgan and Alun Williams are continuing this knock-out series and Newport will be on the air Tuesday, 13th October, at 7.10 p.m. It will be held in the Gymnasium and our Brains Trust hope to keep in the competition a little longer this year. The emphasis is on rugby football but other sports are included. Next Saturday we play Cardiff here and with weather permitting it is hoped to stage as a curtain raiser a Newport Schoolboys match."
"SUPPORTERS NOTES"
"To-day we have pleasure in welcoming one of the strongest sides in the country; one which is likely to provide us with a much sterner test than did Neath last week."
"It is hoped that Newport will be back on the form which enabled them to achieve such a notable win over Bristol a fortnight ago, a win which was well matched by Swansea last week when they defeated the redoubtable English side 22-14 (crossing their opponents' line 5 times with only a solitary reply)."
"Our first coach trip will be to Gloucester on October 17th; leaving N.A.C. at 1 p.m. Fare 7/6d. On the return journey a stop will be made at 'The Swan Inn,' Alvington, where an enjoyable evening was spent after the last Gloucester/Newport match. Those interested should supply their names, as soon as possible, to a committee member or to one of the canteen staff."
"Badges are on sale, price 2/6d., at all entrances and the canteen. All profits obtained by the Supporters' Club, in this or any other way, are utilised for the furtherance of Rugby Football."
