"CLUB NOTES AND NEWS"
"TODAY'S attractive home fixture is only spoiled by the fact that NEWPORT supply no less than six players to Wales tor the International match v Ireland. We congratulate them on this great club distinction, one that should bring team work to the Welsh side. The six players are Bryn Meredith (Captain), Norman Morgan, Brian Jones and that renowned back row of Cresswell, Davidge and Whitson. This does not make our task any easier today for Newport have a habit of producing brilliant reserves when they are most needed; we can be sure they will go all out to beat us. We have retained the team that has done well in our last two games; Peter Crooks returns to full-back as the only change. Thus there is no place today for Greenhow or Simmonds who has been on flying duty for several weeks, while Mettler is out for the rest of the season with a muscle injury sustained in scoring the winning try for the R.A.F. v Oxford University last week."
"We hope for a win today to avenge that 14-6 defeat in October at Newport, and several near misses in recent seasons. Twice we have had a lead of 11 points over Newport in recent games at half-time, only to lose the match in the end!"
"At Birkenhead Andy Hurst was again very prominent, scoring three tries and making another for Syrett; Bendon ran well and made a fifth try for Wills. Ronnie Syrett dropped a goal and Richard Compton converted 2 tries from far out. All this after Birkenhead had started the game off by scoring 2 tries. It was a good victory."
"Tomorrow (Sunday. March 13th) is the Final Day of the Oxford Sevens at Iffley road. This is the strongest Sevens tournament in England and we are proud of our triple win in 1957, 1958 and 1959; tomorrow we hope to pull it off for yet a 4th year. Great news is that Bernard Wright will be playing his first game of the season for us at full-back. The selected Seven is:- Bendon, Wetson, Wills (Capt.), Lewis, Hawkins, Hurst and Bernard Wright. Wetson is the Cambridge University hooker who has played often for us in recent seasons. The named reserves for tomorrow are Barry Wright and Kent (backs) and Woodward (forwards). We hope there will be a strong contingent of Wasps supporters. Play begins at 11-30 a.m."
