From the match programme:-
"NOTES."
"With Wednesday's cheers still echoing around the ground our players can take the field today justly proud of themselves. Much has been written since the 11th, and there is little we can say to enlarge on a magnificent exhibition by a team that rose so superbly to tackle the might of South Africa. This Club can boast of mighty deeds in the past and the heroes of the bygone days who were looking down upon us a few days ago, from wherever they are must in years to come move up a little closer to make room in their immortal gallery for a team, who against the odds, nearly achieved the impossible. Welsh rugby in general and Newport in particular can take courage from this morale boosting performance."
"Swansea come to us today with a certain confidence because they inflicted on us our first defeat of the season, at St. Helens, on September 24th. The result 22pts. to 16pts. in itself speaks of a fast exciting game, and rightly so it was described. They field a formidable side and are particularly strong in key positions. M. Rogers is a full-back with a bright future. He has held his place after keen opposition from H. J. Mainwaring and Brian Lewis. Dewi Bebb is one of the current Welsh wings, and H. J. Mainwaring the Barbarian and ex-Navy utility man is partnered at centre by T. Thomas. Marsden Young replaces Brian Richards the Welsh international outside-half. They have a well knit experienced pack with internationals W. O. Williams, N. Gale, J. Faull, J. Leleu plus trialist G. Lewis and J. Clifford."
"Congratulations to Peter Rees, Bryn Meredith and Glyn Davidge on their selection for Wales next Saturday. Peter Rees made a good impression in the Newport trials but sustained a troublesome injury. He has only played a dozen games for the 1st XV and his performances have been rightly rewarded. According to custom he will stand down today and Ritchie Wills will occupy the left-wing position. Clive Lewis is still available so the only difference in the Newport side from last Wednesday is the Wills for Rees change."
"SUPPORTERS' NOTES."
"Although beaten by the South Africans, Newport exceeded our expectations by putting up such a magnificent performance; not only holding their formidable opponents but actually giving them the new experience of playing second fiddle for most of the game. The tactical kicking of the back division played a significant role, but the bulk of the credit must devolve upon the pack which not only triumphed in the loose but was largely in command in both scrums and lines-out, departments hitherto regarded as particularly the spheres of the tourists. Yet, though the visitors were confined to their own half for three parts of the match, games are won by scores and, in this respect alone, unfortunately, the home side was sadly lacking. Nevertheless, we their supporters, feel very proud of them."
"Today, in Swansea, we welccme very old friends, the pleasure of their visit being no whit deminished by our having an early season's defeat to avenge. On Wednesday's form this should be perfectly possible, but the strain of that game might well have taxed Newport's strength a little too much. However, with such visitors, we may be confident of a fine, open display of Rugby regardless of which side has the better of the encounter."
