From the match programme:-
"NOTES."
"Today is the last Saturday in January, so the season is well past the half way stage. At this period last season we had played only twenty-two games compared to twenty-seven this season. Thirty-six players have appeared this season as against thirty-three at this date last season. Our problem positions seem to be adequately filled now, so with only slight occasional changes the remainder of the campaign should see a well balanced side."
"Llanelly, a club with a great tradition, are always welcome to Rodney Parade. This season form-wise, they seem to be running in parallel with us. We have each played 27 and lost 8. R. H. Williams has retired from the field of play, but his great experience is being utilised administratively for the good of Welsh rugby. Onllwyn Brace is very popular with Newport rugby fans and his tactics about the field are followed keenly. Ray Williams has mentioned retirement over the last few years but he is still turning out and his displays on the wing are as incisive and dangerous as ever. Dennis Evans, an Ebbw Vale product, who was capped against the Springboks is a strong runner and likes to take the shortest way to the line. He has been invited to play for Monmouthshire against Glamorgan next Wednesday at Pontypool (Kick-off 3.45 p.m.). Keith Rowlands the giant second-row forward has been knocking at the door of the Welsh XV for the last few seasons."
"Last season we achieved the double, winning at Llanelly by 14pts. to 3pts. and at home by 22pts. to nil. This season on the Friday night under floodlights, the eve of the Springboks v. Cardiff game we visited Stradey and won a good game by 13pts. to nil. Llanelly finished last season in a blaze of glory by winning the Welsh Seven-a-Side Tournament at the Arms Park. They fielded an exceptionally young and fast side and the 30,000 or more people at Cardiff witnessed "Sevens" rugger at its very best."
"The Springboks visit is nearly at an end, and they have yet to be beaten. Today they play Ulster at Belfast and next Wednesday meet Leinster in Dublin. The Grand Finale of matches in the British Isles will be a week today at Cardiff when they oppose the Barbarians in the traditional end of tour game."
"Norman Morgan is still very much a cripple. His painful leg injury must be a great discomfort to him. Nevertheless he makes the effort to come and support his team, and it is good to see that he is so cheerful. We wish him a speedy recovery."
"Next Thursday we play Oxford University on this ground. Please note that this is an afternoon game and the precise time of the Kick-off will be announced today over the public address system."
