From the match programme:-
"NOTES."
"The result of the Calcutta Cup game at Twickenham this afternoon is now known. There was a certain tenseness attached to this match, but if good rugby was served up then international football will receive a shot in the arm. The result was academic to us and the excitement purely abstract."
"Tonight we can enjoy a "live" match and a game eagerly awaited by all. Aberavon come to us leading the Unofficial Welsh Championship Table and they are practically assured of the title. This season they have been an attraction because of their dominant play, and when we view the points "for" and read that it tops the 500 mark, which is well ahead of their nearest rivals, it proves that they are worthy champions. Only four defeats in 36 gruelling encounters speaks volumes for their team-work and ability to master the various problems faced by them week by week. Cliff Ashton is a wily outside-half and his smooth partnership with Tony O'Connor is the springboard of their attacks. The young centres, one now blooded in international football, are judiciously fed and given the necessary opportunities to exploit their skill. John Collins, once again recalled to the Welsh team is a fast dangerous wing. They are fortunate in having K. Coslett at full-back who is highly rated and right in line for further honours. Their pack, who set the pattern to their success, bristles with Welsh and County caps."
"On New Years' Eve we lost to our visitors by 8pts. to nil. They have a few notable "doubles" to their credit and naturally they will be keen to add to their collection."
"The Welsh Rugby Union has requested this game to be played under the experimental law which limits wing forwards breaking from the scrum until the ball is clear. The referee will interpret this law as if it was in the rule book, so in no way can this be compared to the "gentleman's agreement " that was tried out between various clubs some years ago."
"Roy Webb will deputise for Brian Price in our second row, otherwise we are at full strength. Geoff. Davies has now had two promising games at outside-half. Last Saturday and on Wednesday night he had to contend with wing forwards of the top flight, and he came through this baptism with the skill of a veteran."
"Next Saturday we are away to Gloucester and the following holiday week-end we play the Universities Athletic Union on the Saturday, London Welsh Monday, and the Barbarians on the Tuesday."
"SUPPORTERS' NOTES."
"Especially pleasing was the 13-8 win at Sudbury, with a team much weakened by international duties and injuries, even allowing for the fact that the Wasps were also well below full strength. This coupled with the 8-0 victory over Abertillery, under the lights, on Wednesday, gives more confidence for today's meeting with Aberavon, acknowledged as the Welsh team of the season, and we look forward to a fast open game, with our boys striving to prevent the visitors, who beat us earlier in the season, obtaining the double."
"Our recent successes, and Aberavon's setback at Exeter, appears to have evened the sides, and should result in a narrow margin in the scores whichever side comes out on top."
"The very negative play, at "Arms Park," against Ireland, has led to sweeping changes for the match with France, it remains to be seen if the replacements are good enough to have a chance at Colombe Stadium, our congratulations to our only representative Brian Price, may he have a very successful game."
