"NOTES."
"Today the curtain comes down on our third Easter game. All the opposition were "on tour" in Wales. This afternoon it is the Barbarians and to rugby folk the written or spoken word of "Baa-Baa" conjures up all that is perfect in rugby lore. Their approach to the game has the hall-mark of hard fast scintillating rugby. Their annual appearance here gives us the opportunity to see famous players in action and also the potential stars from the four Home Countries. Their party for the Welsh Tour is made up of 30 players. Scotland provide 8 caps, Ireland 6, England 6 and Wales 2, with the remaining 8 drawn from widely scattered clubs, all top flight players knocking on the door of their respective countries."
"The 2 Welsh representatives are Hadyn Morgan from Abertillery and Gareth Page the Army, although we have a close local link with W. G. D. Morgan of Newbridge, Durham and England."
"As usual they wind up their tour here having played Penarth on Good Friday, Cardiff on Saturday and Swansea yesterday. Last season we surrendered our ground record to them, losing llpts. to 9pts. This was their only victory last year, having made history at Penarth by losing l0pts. to 8pts., sharing 20pts. with Cardiff and succumbing to Swansea 16pts. to nil. On 2nd March this year with 7 Welshmen in the side, which included Bryn Meredith and Brian Price they played glorious rugby to beat the East Midlands in the Mobbs Memorial match at Northampton, by 32pts. to 9pts. They are the proud possessors of the Springboks Head, surrendered by the South Africans at the Arms Park on 4th February. We had three representatives in that game, but the everlasting glory goes to the two Monmouthshire Morgans, who are in the present party."
"Next week-end we are on tour and travel down to the West Country, playing Plymouth on the Saturday, Devonport Services on the Monday and Exeter on Tuesday. The following Saturday we play our last home game of the season, when Bridgend are our guests. They are challenging Aberavon at the top of the Unofficial Welsh Championship Table."
"The Welsh Seven-a-Side Tournament will be held in Cardiff on Saturday, 29th April. All the leading Welsh clubs will be on view and an exciting afternoon's sport is promised. Refreshments will be available on the ground."
"A collection will be taken today for the Newport Schools' Rugby Union. They are desperately in need of funds, so please give generously. Conditions permitting, the Newport Schoolboys will play Tonyrefail Schoolboys as a curtain raiser to this game. After watching the delightful way these lads play, your hearts should be touched and your hands seek your purses to loosen the strings."
"SUPPORTERS' NOTES."
"Although much below full strength, Newport gained a convincing victory at Gloucester, a 14-6 margin on Kingsholme, once regarded as our bogey ground, was very satisfactory indeed."
"Wales, too, although beaten, did well to hold France to such a close result at Colombes Stadium; we offer congratulations to our lone representative, Brian Price, who is reported to have had quite a good game."
"Today's game is the great Easter attraction and will be of particular interest this time owing to the Barbarians and Newport having given, respectively, what are generally conceded to have been the best displays against the Springboks."
"It was with much regret that we learnt of the great loss sustained by the Schools' Rugby Union, in the death of their Chairman, Mr. Don. Jones. He will be greatly missed by us all."
"We shall be running a coach to Neath for the match on Saturday, 22nd April. Fare 7/6d. Full details will be published later. Please book with any Committee member as soon as possible."
