"NOTES."
"Today will be the first page of a new chapter to be added to the volume of our history. Much preliminary work has been undertaken to get the season off to a smooth start. The drive of the Chairman, Bryn V. Williams and the Captain, Bryn V. Meredith has already fired all concerned with a tremendous enthusiasm. Our Chairman has proved in the past that he has the necessary administrative gifts, so the cares of controlling and expediting club business should fall lightly on his shoulders. He will be remembered as a highly competent centre-threequarter. He made 36 appearances out of a possible 40 in that never to be forgotten 1950/51 season when we lost only 2 games."
"Our skipper will not find it a new experience to lead the side. He was elected Captain in 1958/59, but unfortunately could only make 16 appearances. He suffered a serious illness after playing in the first 5 games and he did not play again until Boxing Day. He made a remarkable recovery, again played for Wales, but had to miss our last 8 matches because he was away with the British "Lions" in New Zealand. He has also toured South Africa with the "Lions." His vast experience and delightful approach to the game should enable him to bring out the best in his team."
"We welcome Penarth here today. They always give us a gruelling test in this opening game and in the past have inflicted severe shocks."
"The standard of the trial games organised this year proved that a wealth of talent is in and around the district. The composition of the Newport XV today shows only 3 new faces, Dewi Jones (Caerphilly Grammar, Welsh Secondary Schools and St. Luke's College) at full-back, David Watkins from Cwmcelyn, Blaina a Welsh Youth International at outside-half and Alan Thomas (Tredegar and Pontypool) at wing-forward. Clive Lewis, although still in the R.A.F. is available until the New Year so he will be on the right-wing. Competition is very keen for all positions so a high standard will be necessary to retain a place in the side."
"Season tickets will be on sale today at various points around the ground. Enclosure tickets ?1/15/0 (O.A.P. 17/6d.), Field ?1/5/0 (O.A.P. 10/-)."
"The football pool run so successfully last year for the Building Appeal Fund is commencing again for the coming season. Cards can be obtained on the ground. We urge you to join and to enrol new members. The outlay is merely, 2/6d. which covers 30 matches so the weekly cost is just 1d."
"Looking down the field we still have the familiar power-station at one end, but turning the other-way the view is not what it was, because the gymnasium is being pulled down to make way for a new Club House, so now we have a panoramic view of the Technical College dome. The transformation of the old building to a new structure can be followed match after match as the season progresses and we can all watch and await the completion, with mixed feelings for the past, but with a satisfaction that the future can offer up-to-date amenities to all sections of the Athletic Club."
