From the match programme:-
"NOTES."
"Previous to last season we did not bow the knee to Cardiff for eleven consecutive games. Last season we had to be content with one drawn game, leaving Cardiff the victors in the other three, and in the first game of the series for this season on October 7th we went down at Arms Park by 9pts. to 3pts., so today we are hoping to reverse the cycle and once again strike a winning vein."
"Our visitors playing record for this season makes good reading, having won 12, lost 2 and drawn 1 with 199pts. for and 73pts. against. Lloyd Williams has proved a canny and inspiring leader, and although he would be the last to admit it, much of the credit is his, because he is a master tactician. A. J. Friday is still a strong candidate for the Welsh team. He seems to reserve his best displays when facing us. The Williams Brothers are making their mark as three-quarters and Gordon Wells has emerged with a youthful zest for adventurous opportunism. Keith Rowlands who was a stalwart of the "Scarlets" for many seasons is now a regular in the power-house section of the pack. Cardiff had five representatives in the 1st Welsh Trial at Tredegar last Saturday, L. Williams, G. Davies, K. Jones, C. H. Norris and W. J. Thomas. In the trial Jones and Norris were "props" to Bryn Meredith and W. J. Thomas was in the opposing front-row, but today Thomas will be between his clubmates and Bryn will be facing them."
"The friendly speculation on the merits of Geoff Davies and David Watkins can be further assessed this afternoon. Today will be their third meeting and for David Watkins his third partner because at Cardiff he had John Norris, at Tredegar, Tony O'Connor and today Gordon Lovell."
"Although John Uzzell had only six games for us before returning to St. Luke's College, Exeter, he created a very favourable impression and by continuing to excel at College he was rewarded with an invitation to fill a vacancy in the Trial last week."
"We show five changes irom last Saturday, John Hughes takes over at full-back, Gordon Lovell partners David Watkins, Gordon Britton, after a successful run out with the United last Saturday returns to right-centre, after injuring his hand in the first game of the season, Bryn Meredith replaces Graham Bevan and David Watkins for Ian James."
"Both sides have strong candidates for the Welsh XV and form in the next few weeks will be a pointer to the composition of the 2nd Trial at Bridgend on December 9th and the Final Trial at Swansea on January 6th."
"Mr. Gwyn Thomas of Cardigan is the appointed referee today. He will be remembered for his efficient handling of the Springboks game on this ground."
"Today's game is the only home match during November, but six games will be played here in December."
"SUPPORTERS' CLUB NOTES"
"We welcome our old rivals Cardiff this week. We hope to atone for our loss at Cardiff last month, but whatever happens we shall see a hard game as is always between these two great teams."
"We specially welcome back after injury Gordon Britton and also welcome John Hughes as full-back and Gordon Lovell as inside-half, and this may strengthen Newport a lot."
"It is hoped in the not too distant future to restart our Social Evenings at various Clubs in Newport as we did a few seasons ago. For those who were unfortunate enough not to attend them they include Snooker, Darts, Skittles, etc., and a sing song afterwards with the Newport Rugby Teams and Supporters taking part. They were always a great success and we hope they will be again."
"Don't forget your Supporters Badge, 2/6d. each which is your membership for the season. They are on sale at all Entrances, also at the Canteen."
