From the match programme:-
"NOTES."
"The installation of the floodlights has proved a boon and never more so than with this particular match which unfortunately always coincides with the England v Wales game. Adjustment must be made to avoid the international attraction so with the kind co-operation of our visitors we stage the game on the eve of the first Welsh international of the season. Coventry have a similiar problem because we visit them when England meet Wales at Cardiff. Last season they arranged to play us on the Saturday morning and it attracted a very good gate. Floodlights are now fitted around the Coventry ground, so next year it is very likely that we shall be making use of them."
"Coventry bring a strong XV down to meet us. Their one representative playing at Twickenham is Phil Judd, prop forward (1st cap), and their English international hooker, Bert Godwin is a travelling reserve. Fortunately they can call on Ernie Robinson a former English cap to do the hooking. Peter Jackson, who has appeared 16 times for England is on the right wing. He is a very dangerous attacking player and he delights in breaking into the field, dodging and swerving, but always with one objective - his opponents goal-line. P. G. D. Robbins is another famous name in present day English rugby. His particular gifts as a wing forward makes him a thorn in the side of the opposition, and his keen sense of positional play helps him not only to initiate attacks but very often to be on the right spot at the right time to put finis to a successful movement. He first came into prominence with Oxford University (1954-57) and to-date has collected 18 English caps. Until this season most of his club football has been with Moseley a well known midland side. He must have sad recollections of Rodney Parade, because whilst playing here for the Barbarians he broke a leg and so missed a trip overseas with the British Lions. On that particular day every person present sorrowed at his great misfortune. In 1958 Coventry beat us here under the floodlights and this game will be remembered for a magnificent forward display by the Midlanders. The following year the game at Coventry was cancelled and in 1960 we won here by 11pts. to 8pts. Last year we lost at Coventry by 12pts. to 8pts. and all their points came from 3 penalties and 1 drop goal by their ace kicker, inside-half George Cole. He is in the selected side tonight and if given half a chance he will place the ball between the uprights."
"We have three notable absentees, Bryn Meredith and Brian Price on duty at Twickenham and Glyn Davidge nursing injured ribs. The usual substitutes come in for them, Graham Bevan will hook, Vic Jacques will partner Ian Ford and Roy Webb will be at No. 8."
"We started 1962 with a good win at Swansea last Saturday."
"The postponed away game with Aberavon will be played on Monday, 12th February. The Crosskeys and Ebbw Vale postponements have also to be played later in the season."
"The Final Trial held here a few weeks ago attracted an excellent crowd. The ability of the players eventually selected to represent Wales tomorrow was very heartening and there is an optimistic feeling that they have the edge man for man over their English counterparts."
"To Vincent Griffiths and Ray Lewis we wish a speedy recovery to good health."
