From the match programme:-
"NOTES."
"March madness can affect more than hares. The sudden shuffling by the three leaders of the Unofficial Welsh Championship makes the top position a very hot spot. Ebbw Vale's lead was short lived. Aberavon who sat astride the table all last season and carried on in like manner this season until they lost their grip a few weeks ago, fought back to second place after a good game last Friday against Cambridge University, winning by 14pts. to 13pts. after being 13pts. in arrears at one period. Last Saturday Cardiff lost to Swansea and Ebbw Vale beat Abertillery so the mathematicians had better get out their slide-rules. Breaking into the parlance of another sport there is a team hugging the rails, going very comfortably, waiting for the straight run in, carrying the colours black and amber."
"In order to avoid clashing with the televised Calcutta Cup game last Saturday this match was arranged for tonight. The pitfalls of not entering into competition with internationls are many, because tonight another problem is presented. Wales meet France next Saturday so any players or reserves cannot be considered for games during this week. Aberavon will be without Len Cunningham, prop forward, Kelvin Cosslett, full-back and inside-half, Tony O'Connor, who are all in the selected Welsh team. We shall be short of Bryn Meredith, Glyn Davidge and David Watkins. Young David is standing by as a reserve. Bryn Meredith has been given the captaincy of the Welsh XV. We are fortunate in having experienced players from the United to fill our gaps. Graham Bevan will be in the middle of the front-row and Roy Webb will be at No. 15."
"Our away game with Aberavon on December 11th was postponed due to weather conditions. The game was re-arranged for Monday, February 12th under floodlights. Torrential rain fell during most of the match and we have to thank the left boot of Norman Morgan for dropping a goal which proved the only score of the game."
"Cliff Ashton has not been available for Aberavon for many weeks because he has been to the U.S.A. on business. He has returned now, so his familiar figure will be seen again guiding and steadying the youthful talent alongside him."
"Next Saturday we are home to Gloucester. This will be an evening game under floodlights. Kick-off 6.30 p.m."
"The following Thursday, March 29th, we play our return game with Pontypool at the Park. One of our regulars will not be available for this game because he has an important appointment at Leicester. We congratulate Des. Greenslade on his selection for the Barbarians who play Leicester on the 29th."
