From the match programme:-
"WELCOME NEWPORT"
"Granted a fine evening, a large crowd will see Pontypool all-out to reverse the decisions that Newport secured against them last season."
"With 5 wins and 1 draw, this strong Newport XV are going 'great guns'. On 22nd October, their new Clubhouse and Gymnasium will be opened, and a British Lions XV led by Bryn Meredith will play Newport to celebrate the event. We extend a hearty welcome to Newport and hope both sides will provide a good open game."
"This evening, Mr. Alf. Hewitt will launch an appeal to you for funds to help keep going our "live" commentaries to Pontypool & Panteg Hospitals. The Supporters Club received many letters of thanks from ex-patients. An anonymous gift of £1 was received last week. This will show just how much this service is appreciated."
"Yours in Sport, Hilton Jones"

The South Wales Argus of Thursday, 27th September 1962 reported:-
"NEWPORT LOSE UNBEATEN RECORD"
"Pontypool win in great finish"
"by Eynon Hammett"
"There were jubilant scenes at Pontypool Park last night when Pontypool after shattering Llanelly's unbeaten record two days earlier did the same to Newport with a shock win of 2g., ten points, to 1p.g., three points, in a game which left a big crowd almost delirious with excitement."
"After a tremendous forward struggle in which Des Greenslade's power unit held the initiative but were smothered by blanket covering, Newport went ahead with a penalty goal from point-blank range 15 minutes from the end, only to crumple into defeat in the last ten minutes."
"Though admittedly they had little room to move in the face of Pontypool's ruthless tackling, Newport contributed to their trouble by keeping the game close in the first half and through the unwillingness of their half backs to take chances."
"If they planned to wear down the lighter Pontypool forwards they miscalculated, for it was Pontypool who finally showed the greater staying power."
"It was a remarkable tribute to Pontypool's fitness and stamina that though playing their fourth big game in seven days they were still able to call on fresh reserves of energy towards the end."
"Their supporters' hearts flopped when they gave away a penalty dead in front of their posts and Norman Morgan put Newport ahead with the simplest of goals."
"But it proved to be the spark which kindled fresh fire in the Pontypool side and an up and under kick by Ben Jones from his own 25 soon afterwards was the signal for an all-out rally. The forwards followed up Jones' kick and swarmed to Newport's line where only a split-second save by Morgan foiled them."
"Unhappy Morgan"
"When Pontypool tried again the unhappy Morgan was beaten by the bounce and Ben Jones opened up for Ray Watkins to beat his man and link up with Mike Cooper who kicked across the line for newcomer Bill Morris to sprint down the wing for a corner try which Ray Cheney converted with a magnificent kick."
"Newport began to adopt the tactics they should have tried early but they had left it far too late and when Morgan dropped a pass on his line Clive Rowlands darted in to touch down for Cheney to again convert and seal Newport's fate."
"The heroes of the game were the Pontypool forwards who while unable to match the drive of the Newport pack and forced to play second fiddle in the set pieces held on grimly and contested every inch of ground."
"Eddie Jones, Noel Williams and John Harris were a spirited back row and Graham Bishop and the former Newport forward Mervyn Hinnem, now the Pontypool United captain, were also to the fore against Ian Ford, Brian Price, and Brian Cresswell, who were the pick of the Newport forwards."
"The Newport halves Bob Prosser and David Watkins were disappointing and suffered in comparison with Rowlands and Jones, who in a game which allowed no time for thought were able to draw on wider experience and remain unflustered when the atmosphere was tense."
"Locked rhythm"
"The Newport pair lacked rhythm and their kicking seldom troubled the defence, in which Cheney was outstanding with his long-range touch finding."
"Brian Jones looked the best of the Newport threequarters and Fenton Coles and Ray Watkins did good work for Pontypool."
"Alan Thomas, the Newport wing forward, hurt his ankle in the closing stages and this eased the pressure on Ben Jones but it is doubtful whether Newport could have withstood Pontypool's rally even if he had not been injured."
"The victory put Pontypool back in the top rank of Welsh rugby from which they fell during their unlucky spell last season."
"Newport should be able to play the rugby of which they are evidently capable now that they have no record to inhibit them."
