From the match programme:-
"CLUB NOTES"
"We come to the last match in September with a better record than many people were predicting at the start of the season. The selectors must have been given great encouragement from the performances versus Swansea and Newbridge when we achieved our first Merit Table points."
"Although many new faces have been tried it is certain that once a balanced team can be fielded regularly newly appointed first team coach John Ryan will be able to guide the team on their way back to the top. The way ahead will be hard and every encouragement must be given to John and no overnight miracles expected."
"Best wishes are extended to Gerald Fuller, Stephen Willis and David Rees who have now taken up places at St. Luke's and Kings College, London, respectively. We are certain they will obtain places in their respective 1st XV's and look forward to seeing them during the Christmas vacation."
"Last Monday evening the Japanese touring team trained at Rodney Parade under flood-lights prior to their game versus Monmouthshire. Their manager Mr. S. Konno visited the committee room in company with Mr. Handel Rogers the tour Liaison Officer and presented an official tour photograph for the club museum and tour ties to Mr. Bryn Williams and Mr. R. T. Carter, chairman and secretary of the football committee. It is rumoured that Handel only attended to pick up our tactics for today's game so that he could signal them back to Stradey Park."
"Congratulations must be passed to Jeff Watkins and his wife Sarri on the birth of their twin girls Sophi and Hanna, also to Malcolm Thomas on his promotion to Managing Director of Reed Paper."
"TODAY'S VISITORS"
"Although Llanelli were one of the founder members of the Welsh Rugby Union in 1880 and have produced many great teams and players during their 100 year history (the following are a few from various eras C. B. Nicoll, R. T. Gabe, Tom Evans, E. Finch, J. Lang, A. Skym, Albert Jenkins, W. H. Clement (the present secretary of the Welsh Rugby Union), Ivor Jones, Terry Davies, D. O. Brace, Carwyn James, Lewis Jones, Rhys Williams, Terry Price, Barry John, D. K. Jones, Norman Gale, Delme Thomas}, they have certainly projected a tremendous image over the last six years. Their public relations have been magnificent and backed up by a sparkling brand of rugby on the field, they must rank as one of the greatest clubs in modern day rugby."
"Last season they celebrated their centenary in fantastic fashion, beating the All Blacks for the first time in their history, winning the W.R.U. Challenge Cup, the Floodlight Alliance and the Snelling Sevens. If we can match this next season everyone will be delighted."
"The legend (Carwyn James) has retired to regenerate his energies, but his successor Norman Gale has certainty continued in the same manner and after a highly successful tour of Canada (their record was P.7, W.7, For 245, Against 45) they come today unbeaten and eager to add to their victims."
2In welcoming "the Scarlets" special mention must be made of Phil Bennett (their captain), John Williams, Roy Bergiers, Derick Quinnell and last season's Welsh Player of the Year, Tom David, for it was rumoured that Canada were claiming them as subjects following the time they spent there during the summer."
"Andy Hill is the Scarlets' record points holder having scored 362 during season 1971-72."
"Welcome Scarlets!"
