From the match programme:-

"Welcome NEWPORT"

"For tonight's game we welcome the Newport team, officials and supporters to Pontypool Park. This season of course the Black & Ambers are celebrating their centenary and we congratulate them on this. Last season they made a marvellous recovery after a bad start to the season and finished eighth in the championship, which was a rise of seven places on the previous season. Their pack has blended well but they will be without several first choices tonight including their inspiring captain Geoff Evans who is recovering from an injured leg, we wish him a speedy recovery."

"Last week Pontypool lost narrowly at Bedford in a game which was marred by the unfortunate sending off of Tony Faulkner. We do not condone dirty play but there are always two teams playing. Tony will certainly be missed during his enforced absence."

"We congratulate the four players who appeared for Monmouthshire against Somerset at Bridgewater last week. They were Tony Faulkner, Bob Windsor, who had to switch to prop in a late reshuffle and locks Bill Evans and Ron Floyd Who was making his first county appearance."
