"CLUB NOTES"
"Following our excellent performance versus Swansea in the 3rd round of the W.R.U. Challenge Cup, everyone at Rodney Parade was looking forward to the draw for the quarter-finals. Unfortunately 'Lady Luck' has once again failed to smile kindly upon us, and we have been drawn away to Bridgend at the Brewery Field. But we mustn't be too despondent, it could have been Pontypool at Pontypool Park, and our games versus Bridgend over the last decade have always produced fast and exciting rugby with both clubs having their share of success. Let's hope this tradition continues when the date is finally agreed upon."
"Last Monday saw us maintain our challenge for the Unofficial Club Championship with a hard-earned victory over Cross Keys at Pandy Park. Victories are never easily obtained in the Western Valley and this one was no exception. The pack once again demonstrated their tremendous power and it was unfortunate that Del Haines received such a serious injury just before the final whistle. Everyone at Rodney Parade hopes that he will not be out of the game too long, and that we will see him and skipper Geoff Evans back in action soon."
"With the team now in serious contention for three major titles, this afternoon's Merit Table clash is of vital importance as the team and officials realise it would be wonderful to carry off one title at least in our Centenary Season."
"Off the field our Rothmans Quiz team completed the execution of Pontypool in the Second Leg of their First Round tie, the final score being 174 points to 114 points. They now await the winners of the Cross Keys v. Newbridge tie who will be their opponents in the next round."
"On Wednesday, 12th February, 1975, Max Boyce and Alun Williams are providing an evening of entertainment commencing at 8.30 p.m. Admission is by ticket only, priced ?1. Such is the demand for tickets for these popular artists that only a few are still available. It was hoped to obtain a date for another 'Evening' later in the season, but this was impossible due to the great demand for their services."
"Last night in the Brecon Lounge a 'Special Cocktail Party' was held to honour all the Internationals of Every Section of the club. It was a great success and pleasing to see so many famous faces present who have helped create Newport history."
"WELCOME TO RODNEY PARADE"
"Last season saw Llanelli earn the unique distinction of winning the W.R.U. Challenge Cup and the Unofficial Club Championship as the top club in Wales. Four of their team, skipper Phil Bennett, John J. Williams, Roy Bergiers and Tommy David were members of the highly successful Lions team who toured South Africa last season. They all upheld the great tradition of their club and Welsh rugby to the full, with Phil and J.J. being outstanding in the Test Series."
"This season the 'Scarlets' made an inconsistent start, but have recently regained their sparkle and are determined not to sacrifice their position as Wales' top team easily. Such is the strength of the club, this afternoon they decided to field two teams in important fixtures, one here at Rodney Parade, and the other at Amman United where they are playing their third round W.R.U. Challenge Cup game. Supporters at Rodney Parade are very disappointed that many of the famous names are missing but are certain that the fifteen men wearing 'Scarlet' jerseys will provide the brand of rugby expected from Stradey Park these days. On the Friday before the All Blacks v. Barbarians game both teams fought out an interesting 3-all draw in poor conditions at Stradey so there is everything to play for today."
"Norman Gale who coached the team so successfully last season, has been rejoined by Carwyn James, who after a season off to regenerate his batteries, is back as keen as ever. They are a pair who deserve the greatest respect and can be relied upon to maintain the success achieved by the 'Scarlets' over the last seven years."
"Congratulations must be paid to their latest international, centre three-quarter Ray Gravell. He made a very promising debut in Paris with his strong aggressive play, both in attack and defence. Special mention must also be made of prolific points scorer Andy Hill who recently made his 300th appearance in a 'Scarlet' jersey. Although he has never won international honours he has won many games on his own for his club."
"As one of the founder Clubs of the W.R.U. Llanelli are always welcome at Rodney Parade and we are certain that today's game will be worthy of all that is best in rugby football."
"Welcome Scarlets!"
