From the match programme:-
"CLUB NOTES"
"Last Monday saw the 1st team fail in injury time to get the Aberavon ground record. This was unfortunate, as it would have been the ideal way for the 'depression' that has settled over Rodney Parade during the last month to be lifted. This afternoon, is another ideal opportunity for the wind of change, so let's hope the wind is in the right direction."
"John Ryan and the team must now realise what Leeds United under Don Revie must have felt on many occasions, getting so near to the top honours and then failing. At the start of February we were in contention for the three major honours at stake in Welsh rugby, now we are battling to regain a winning way after failing to achieve victory in our last seven matches. John and the team are well aware of the situation, and are determined to show that they have the character and ability to regain their rightful position, just as Leeds United have. Supporters are certain that this memorable season will end on a high note and hope it will start against our 'old rivals' today."
"While the 1st team have been having their problems, the United and Youth teams have been achieving a string of excellent results, so the future of the club seems to be in very good hands. The Youth team will be going on tour to Belgium before the end of the season, and with the 1st team going to the U.S.A. in August, and the United having visited Italy, all teams will have made an overseas tour in this Centenary Season."
"Full details of arrangements for the U.S.A. tour are not available at the moment, but as soon as they are supporters will be informed in case they would like to travel and support the team. Our Rothmans Quiz Team were defeated by Cross Keys after winning the 1st leg so we will have to wait another year to carry off the trophy."
"The Chairman and Football Committee would like to apologise to all Members who did not receive a Field or Enclosure ticket for this season's Home Internationals."
"During the last two seasons our allocation of tickets has been drastically cut by the Welsh Rugby Union, and in order that tickets are issued in the fairest way, the Committee have now decided that Field and Enclosure tickets for next season's matches wili be allocated on the 'Alphabet System', which has worked well as far as Stand Tickets are concerned."
"WELCOME TO RODNEY PARADE"
"In keeping with their inconsistent form this season the 'Blue and Blacks' have reached the depths and the heights during the last two weeks. Their supporters will wish to forget the dismal display and ultimate score at Stradey, while they will no doubt remember the ecstacies of the final fifteen minutes at Arms Park, only a fortnight ago. Their rugby during that period was 'vintage' Cardiff, and it is certain that they will endeavour to produce the same again this afternoon. Although it is certain that they will be well aware that they have already been defeated at Rodney Parade once this season."
"While looking through some old papers recently, I came across some comments of a Newport v. Cardiff game played on Saturday, 12th February 1910, by Mr. Hamish Stuart in the "Daily Chronicle". "
" "These observations have been prompted by the travesty of rugby football which the match between Newport and Cardiff on Saturday produced. Unfair methods, foul play, deliberately rough play, 'playing to win' - these were the only features of a match in which Welsh football knew its culminating disgrace of the season. After such a display there was, one reads, a 'scene of great enthusiasm'. Why? Simply because Cardiff had beaten the unbeaten Newport side by a point. The rivalry between the two clubs is so keen that all 'play to win', none for the pleasure of playing. The play is of no moment; the result is everything, and the means by which it is reached, however discreditable, are justified by the end! The referees tolerate, as I have said, methods of play, breaches of the letter of the law, and of the spirit of the game, which amaze and disgust the 'alien' onlooker, used to clean football and fair play, for its own sake, so that the evil grows by what it feeds upon." "
"The rivalry between the clubs is still as great as ever but it is certain that if Mr. Hamish Stuart was alive today and able to witness modern-day games, he would have to alter his views. Let's hope that this afternoon's game wilt be a credit to both clubs and also rugby football."
"Everyone at Rodney Parade would like to extend their congratulations to Gerald Davies and Gareth Edwards on their great contribution to the Welsh team's success this season, and in particular the magnificent display against Ireland."
"Welcome Cardiff, may our rivalry continue to the benefit of Welsh rugby."
