From the match programme:-
"CLUB NOTES"
"As these notes had to be submitted before last Saturdays visit to Pontypool Park (a visit that the players were confident was going to give them their first victory over Pontypool for four years) it is hoped that both tonights clubs are still in contention for both the Club Championship and the Welsh Merit Table. They have both had excellent seasons, providing their supporters with an excellent, exciting brand of rugby. It is certain that everyone present at Rodney Parade this evening will see a game to remember."
"Last Wednesdays victory over Gloucester was achieved by a fine all round team performance. In the second half the rugby produced was of the highest order, with the back row of Bryan Lease, Jeff Squire and Geoff Evans proving the spearhead. If the finishing had matched the approach work the 'Cherry and Whites' would have been overwhelmed. With five home games left (including tonights) lets hope this standard can be maintained."
"Wing threequarter Jeff Cranton certainly made a promising debut in a 'Black and Amber' jersey and should prove a valuable addition to the Rodney Parade playing staff."
"Wedding bells rang for top try scorer Ken Davies and his bride Mary last Saturday as they did recently for Richard Taylor and his wife Carol. Everyone at Rodney Parade send their best wishes for the future to both couples. Congratulations must also be paid to Geoff Hughes and his wife Susie on the birth of their first child, a boy."
"Following their recent victories, the United are well on course to achieve their ambition of 1,000 points this season. A full break down of their record will appear in one of the Easter programmes. Long serving (I can't run fast enough to call him veteran) flank forward Keith Poole has done a splendid job of leading the team in the absence of elected captain David Rogers (who has been doing an excellent job for the 1st XV). His contribution to the Rodney Parade scene over the last decade is outstanding."
"Next week-end the Youth XV visit the Hampshire area on tour. It is certain that they will enjoy themselves, gain experience and enhance the name of Newport Rugby Club."
"Julie Southall of Llanwern, left for Russia this week and everyone at Rodney Parade hopes that the treatment she receives will ensure that her eye illness is cured. All Best Wishes Julie."
"WELCOME TO RODNEY PARADE"
"This evening we are delighted to welcome Bridgend, one of the most exciting teams in Welsh rugby, to Rodney Parade. During the last decade matches between our two clubs have produced rugby of the highest quality and it is no secret that the 'Blue and Whites' consider Rodney Parade as one of their main bogy grounds."
"Fixtures between the clubs commenced in 1879, with Newport winning by 4 goals, 3 tries to Nil. Since then the record reads. Played 46, Newport winning 26, Bridgend 15 and 5 being Drawn. Bridgend have only achieved the double on one occasion, 1969-70, while their only other victory at Rodney Parade was in 1934."
"Founded in 1878, Bridgend have contributed a great deal to the Welsh rugby scene, both on and off the field. At the end of last season their secretary Durbar Lawrie, received a presentation to mark his outstanding service to the Brewery Field club. Another stalwart behind the scenes is Ivor John, and it is certain that these two will spearhead the club towards their Centenary season."
"This seasons captain, the versatile Lyndon Thomas toured South Africa with the Newport team in 1973. A former Welsh 'B' International he has given the club outstanding service in the centre, outside-half and full-back positions. Unfortunately he has been in the wars recently against Gwent clubs, breaking his nose versus Pontypool, and then repeating the injury last week in the game versus Newbridge. His team who have been strong challengers for the Club Championship and the Merit Table throughout the season are a blend of youth and experience. Behind the scrum, Lyndon is joined by Viv Jenkins, Steve Fenwick, Ian Lewis (who looks certain to break Keith Bradshaws club record of 279 points in a season) and Alan Walters, while up front, the evergreen John Lloyd, Derick Brain, John Luff and Gareth Jones provide the ball."
"Earlier in the season the Black & Ambers won a memorable victory at the Brewery Field by 24 pts. to 15 pts. scoring three tries in the last ten minutes. So the scene is set for a game to remember. Welcome Bridgend, may the best team win."
