"Newport opened the present season in convincing form. They won the "Invitation Sevens" which was staged at Cardiff Arms Park as part of the Cardiff club's Centenary Celebrations. Eight teams drawn from the four home countries took part with the Gwent side defeating the Barbarians in an exciting final. The Newport captain David Burcher emerged as the "Man of the Tournament" in which he scored a remarkable 30pts."
"The Welsh selectors this week announced the East Wales team to play against the Argentinians at Rodney Parade in the opening game of the tour. There are three Newport players in the side, David Burcher who is vice-captain, Jeff Watkins who was on the Barbarians Canadian tour, and Geoff Evans. Among the replacements are Brian Lease, Gareth Evans, Brian Ford and Allan Evans."
"Newport's full back, diminutive Leighton Davies has been in impressive form this season and is now firmly established in the full back position. Ken Davies who played his first game of the season against Neath last Saturday scored two tries and is back in contention for the right wing position."
"The Merit Table which has had to exist without a sponsor for the past few seasons has received a boost in the shape of sponsorship by a brewery firm. The position at present is that all matches between Welsh clubs with the exception of Cardiff and London Welsh count in the Merit Table. Last season's winners Pontypridd won the title during their Centenary year."
"Since he joined the All Whites Scottish international Lewis Dick has already made his presence felt on the Welsh rugby scene. His ambition is to regain his place in the Scottish team for whom he has played 13 times. We wish him every success in the future and extend to him a warm welcome to Swansea."
"The Barbarians have selected an impressive side to play against Scottish club Melrose in a centenary match. Included in the team are two of Swansea's internationals, Phil Llewellyn and Geoff Wheel, both Barbarians of long standing."
"When referring in last week's programme to Mumbles players in the present Swansea side we omitted to mention Charles Janczewski. Jan of course played for Mumbles before joining the Swansea club."
