"GRAND RUGBY MATCH"
"NEWBRIDGE v. NEWPORT"
"(WHITBREAD WELSH MERIT TABLE GAME)"
"Tuesday, 20th September, 1977 Kick-off 5.45 p.m."
"We extend a hearty welcome to our old friends (and foes!) Newport and both sides know that tonight's game will be one of the hardest games of the season. The first ever game between the clubs took place at Rodney Parade on the 17th January, 1920, when Newport won by 17-0. Altogether the clubs have played fifty-six times with Newport leading by thirty-five games to fifteen with six drawn. The last time we won was at Newport on the 3rd November, 1973, when we won by 13-0. Newport are once again captained by David Burcher who led Newport to their triumph last year. In his absence Colin Smart is leading the side. Tonight they are without their "Lions," although this does not make our task any easier. Newport are the current holders of the Whitbread Merit Table title and also of the W.R.U. Cup and supporters will not need to be reminded of the quarterfinal played on this ground last season when we lost by 13-10. Newport will be seeking to get back on the victory trail tonight having lost their last two games, at Bristol, and at Neath last Saturday."
"Last Saturday saw us sparkle and then fall under the spell of the "Wizards." It was a game that saw us performing very well at the set pieces, but in the end lost because Aberavon took their chances and we did not. Tonight sees Alwyn Evans playing his first game of the season having recovered from injury and Richard Perrott recovered from honeymooning also playing his first game this season. It is good to see David George back in our colours and it appears this talented player has decided to rejoin us."
