"CLUB NOTES"
"The hard earned victory at the Welfare Ground, Newbridge, on Tuesday evening, certainly put a stop to all those 'Doubting Thomas' ' who thought the Black and Ambers were in for a lean season following successive defeats at the Memorial Ground, Bristol and the Gnoll, Neath. Showing a great deal of character, the team under acting captain Alun Evans, withstood the opening onslaught from our Western Valley rivals, and were well worthy of their victory when the final whistle sounded. During the month of September, the selectors, either by choice or through injuries, have given a number of new faces the opportunity to stake their claims for a permanent first team place. As the month of October contains no less than nine fixtures, it is hoped that the pool of talent available, will unable a sound base to be provided for our challenge for honours."
"Last night 'our Lions' David, Gareth and Jeff, together with those 'Terrible Twins' Bobby Windsor and Charlie Faulkner, from some side up the Eastern Valley were honoured at the Mansion House, by the Mayor of Newport Councillor Aubrey Hames, in recognition of their selection for the British Lions, and the excellent ambassadors they had all been for the town of Newport."
"Congratulations must be extended to David Waters, on his selection to represent Monmouthshire in their game versus Gloucestershire next Monday. It is his county debut, and everyone at Rodney Parade hopes it is the first of many honours that will come his way. While congratulating one of our younger players, I am certain that everyone will commiserate with Keith Poole over the injury he sustained during last Tuesday's game. In true 'Poolee' fashion he gave everything for the Newport Club, and remained on the field when he should possibly have come off. He is unlikely to be fit for a few weeks and it must be considered a serious set back in his attempt to overtake the 'Gentle Giant' Ian Ford, as the top appearance player in the history of the Newport Club. Keith only needs another 18 games to overtake Ian's 482 total, and is certain to be back in serious contention as quickly as possible."
"This afternoon the Chairman, committee and players of Newport Rugby Football Club, extend a warm welcome to the Minneapolis R.F.C. of the Mid West Rugby Union of America, who are present with officials of the Old Illtydians R.F.C. of Cardiff. It is rumoured that they wanted to see the best, so they obviously came to Rodney Parade."
"WELCOME TO RODNEY PARADE"
"This afternoon we are delighted to once again welcome the 'All Whites' to Rodney Parade. Under their new captain Alan Meredith, they have made a sound start to the season, easily defeating Cross Keys and Bristol (who defeated us at the Memorial Ground) at St. Helens, while losing to Moseley at the Reddings, by 13 pts. to 6 pts. with a side seriously affected by the Barbarians v Lions game at Twickenham."
"Everyone in Welsh rugby must be delighted that Roger Blyth, is now fit and well and ready to contribute his own brand of magic to the Swansea scene. Last Saturday he showed against Bristol, that he is out to regain his position as under study to the great J.P.R. in the Welsh Squad, but he must be well aware that he can expect keen competition from our own Chris Webber. Swansea, must also be delighted that the disappointment suffered by Geoff Wheel, at missing the British Lions tour to New Zealand, has in no way dented his enthusiasm for the game. It is good to see him performing with such vigor, as he endeavours to show the rugby world what a force he would have been if he had made the tour. Like our 'Lions' Trevor Evans, has decided to take a well earned rest before starting the season, but Swansea will be anxious that he is not away too long in order that he can renew his flank forward partnership with English International Mark Keyworth."
"Outside half David Richards has shown he has the ability to challenge for a place in the Welsh team, and he must have been delighted to have played in the Silver Jubilee Game at Twickenham for the Barbarians. Skipper Alan Meredith was a substitute for the game, but everyone at Rodney Parade will remember his contribution to the Barbarians drawn game last Easter, which robbed us of the Club Championship. Another sub. at Twickenham, was prop forward Phil Llewellyn, who is anxious to play for Wales once again."
"Last season we achieved the 'Double' over the 'All Whites', winning at St. Helens by 9 pts. to Nil and the return at Rodney Parade, by 20 pts. to 3 pts. Fixtures between our two clubs have been taking place for over one hundred years, the rivalry has been great, but rugby football has always been the winner. Let's hope it continues today."
"Welcome Swansea, may the game be worthy of two great clubs."
