"CLUB NOTES"
"The first team showed signs at Old Deer Park, last Saturday that they have regained a little of the form that made them such a formidable combination last season. The forwards performed with great strength and power, while the backs showed that they are capable of scoring tries of the highest quality. Let's hope that this new found form continues not only this afternoon, but for the rest of this season. Our victory over Llanharan in the first round of the Schweppes W.R.U. Challenge Cup, means that we will entertain Rhiwbina here at Rodney Parade on Saturday 19th December."
"During the last two weeks, Rodney Parade has been the centre of activity with the arrival of British Lions scrum half Brynmor Williams and Cross Keys wing Keith Jefferson. Both these young players are very welcome and we trust that their stay will be long and profitable. They must be well aware of the competition they face to secure a permanent first team place, but can be relied upon to show their skills."
"Everyone at Rodney Parade would like to extend their congratulations to Brynmor and Chris Webber, on their selection for the Welsh 'B' Squad. We hope they will gain selection when the team is picked over the week-end and enjoy success at Nantes on the 11th December, 1977, versus France 'B'. David Waters must be considered very unlucky not to gain a place in the squad following his fine form this season, while Steve Jones must have come under consideration if he had not been under suspension following his sending off versus Llanharan. Both have time on their side as have other members of the team. Congratulations must also be extended to Justin Ford on his selection for Cambridge in next weeks Varsity Match."
"During their history Newport Football Committee have always contained a number of members who are prominent bowlers during the summer season. This season is no different, with 'Nick' Carter, Alf Panting, Jim Hawkins, Roy Taylor and Cyril Saunders serving both sections. These members, together with many voluntary gatemen who are also bowlers, will be at the Athletic Club on Wednesday 7th December for the Bowls Sections Christmas Whist Drive. Play will commence at 7 p.m. and tickets priced 20p will be available at the door. Why not come along and try and win one of the many prizes on offer."
"This afternoon Newport Rugby Football Club extend a very warm welcome to Mr. W. A. Bryce of the Scottish Rugby Union, to referee the game. We trust he will find his visit a worthwhile exercise and that the game will contain many memorable memories for him to return over the border with."
"The Supporters Club will be arranging buses for our visit to Aberavon next Saturday, so why not make sure of your seat by handing your name in at the score box immediately after todays game."
"WELCOME TO RODNEY PARADE"
"Formed in 1888-89, Bristol have always been welcome and popular visitors to Rodney Parade. This afternoon they are seriously weakened by England Regional Trial calls, but the 'Black and Ambers' are well aware that any fifteen men in 'Blue and White' hoops will provide true West Country opposition. The changes that have been necessary will give Rodney Parade fans the opportunity of seeing that outstanding English hooker John Pullin, once again. John has served his club, county and country with great distinction. He has been a credit to the game and the ideal example for any young player to model himself on. Another player who has always performed with credit versus Newport, is scrum half Alan Pearn. His prolific points scoring ability has made him a player to be feared and it is hoped that the 'Black and Ambers' will give him few chances to demonstrate his goal kicking skill this afternoon."
"Earlier this season, Bristol became the first team to defeat Newport, when they turned a 9-3 defeat into a 13-9 victory with a fine second half display. That victory at the Memorial Ground, makes the overall record between the clubs read. Played 140 Newport 95, Bristol 37 and 8 being drawn. Last season, Newport achieved 'the double' by winning 21-7 at Rodney Parade and 21-9 at the Memorial Ground. It is interesting to note that Bristol have not won at Rodney Parade since 1972-73, so they are well aware of the task that faces them."
"The Bristol Club have made a great contribution to English and West Country rugby and it is hoped that the players who are missing today because of the trial will bring further honours to the club and emulate such famous names as Len Corbett, Sam Tusker, Don Burland, John Thome, David Watt, Richard Sharpe, Dave Rollit and John Pullin."
"Welcome Bristol,.your visits to Rodney Parade can be relied upon to produce rugby football of the highest order, and with Mr. Bryce from Scotland refereeing it is certain to be a truly International occasion."
