From the match programme:-

"A WARM WELCOME TO PONTYPOOL PARK"

"For tonights Whitbread Merit Table game we once again extend a hearty welcome to our old rivals, Newport. The Black and Ambers come to the Park tonight, undefeated, having beaten Coventry and Bristol and gaining a draw with Bath. Indeed, their game with Bristol last Saturday must have been a cracker judging by the scoreline of 29 pts. to 24."

"Last Saturday's game against the J.R.U. showed a marked improvement in the play of Pontypool's back division as compared with the previous week against Bath. Although the opposition was not as strong, it was nevertheless good to see the wings receiving the ball with room and time to spare, the result being that Gareth White (three) and Ian Evans (two) scored five tries between them. Talking of Ian Evans, this player certainly seems to be a good capture and he should prove to be a valuable acquisition to Pontypool. It was also good to see another newcomer, centre David Williams, from Glamorgan Wanderers scoring a try on his home debut."
