"CLUB NOTES"
"Although obviously disappointed with the teams performance last Saturday, everyone at Rodney Parade was pleased that a victory was achieved over old rivals Biackheath. This could help restore confidence with the players and the return of key players from injury within the next week will certainly help."
"The supporters presentation to the legendary Keith Poole, last Saturday evening, was greeted by standing ovation and prolonged applause. This showed the great affection all those followers of rugby football at Newport Athletic Club had and still have for Poole. Chairman of the Supporters Club, Joe Walsh, in making the presentation of the John Morgan statuette, thanked Keith for all the pleasure he had given thousands of people, and hoped that his dedication and loyalty would be an inspiration to all future Black and Amber players. In reply Keith in his unimatable manner thanked everyone for the presentation (althougn he thought the nose was a little out of proportion and had been modeled for by his close friend Paul Watts) and for the support throughout his career. He considered Newport as the 'greatest' rugby club in the world and it had been a pleasure to play with so many great players over a long period. Miss Pat Tuckwell, Secretary of the Supporters Club, presented a bouquet of flowers to Keith's wife. Although he is now playing out his rugby career at Talywain, Keith will always be remembered and welcome at Rodney Parade."
"All members and supporters are reminded that our home game versus Gloucester will be played on Friday evening, 20th October, kick-off 7.15 p.m., and not on Saturday 21st as listed on fixture list. We trust that the re-arrangement will help you enjoy not only our game but also the Cardiff v. All Blacks game to be played at the National Stadium on the 21st."
"The injury sustained by Swansea outside-half David Richards in his clubs game versus Llanelli, could have meant a 'B' Cap for our David Barry. This is an honour that would delight his many supporters at Rodney Parade. His reliable boot accounted for fourteen of our points last Saturday and as our top points scorer he is a vital member of the team at the moment."
"Supporters are requested to make every effort to ensure that the Cabaret Night at the Club Double Diamond, Caerphilli, on the 10th November (please see the advert at the back of this programme) and the Social Evening, to be held in the Rodney Hall, on the eve of the Gwent v. All Blacks game Tuesday 28th November, are outstanding successes."
"WELCOME TO RODNEY PARADE"
"This evening we are pleased to welcome our near neighbours from the Western Valley of Gwent, Newbridge. Like ourselves they have been experiencing great difficulties during the opening six weeks of this season, but they proved by their 16pts to nil victory at the Welfare Ground on Tuesday 19th September, that the mere sight of a Black and Amber jersey gives them the right kind of inspiration. Victory tonight would obviously mean 'the double', a feat they have not achieved over the Black and Ambers since the 1969-70 season, so it is doubtful if coaches Keith Westwood and Alan Williams will need to motivate the team."
"Skipper Clive Davies, whose appearances have been very limited due to personal reasons, toured Australia with Wales, during the summer and made his international debut in the 2nd Test. Everyone at Rodney Parade, extend their congratulations to him on adding to the list of Gwent players to wear the coveted 'red jersey'. While Clive has been missing, the evergreen Dennis Hughes, has been playing superb rugby, for the team he has devoted his rugby life too. Dennis is to Newbridge rugby what Ian Ford and Keith Poole were to Newport rugby. His dedication and enthusiasm for the game is as strong now as it was when he first wore a Newbridge jersey many moons ago. He epitomizes everything that is good in the game and is bound to serve as an inspiration to all those young players who have the privilege of playing with him. This may be his last appearance at Rodney Parade, (although it has been rumoured that he has found the secret of eternal youth) and I am certain that everyone who has admired his skill and sportsmanship over the years, would like to say. 'Thank you, Dennis'. "
"At the other end of the scale, Newbridge are looking for the same kind of service from that young talented outside-half Justin Robinson. An exciting runner and tactical kicker, this former Secondary Schools International, only needs experience before making his mark on the senior scene. He is being looked after at inside-half by Lloyd Davies, who spent his early days at Rodney Parade and Pontypool Park, before arriving at the Welfare Ground."
"Last Saturday 'the Bridge' lost to Tredegar, but they don't play in Black and Amber jerseys,. Welcome Newbridge, may tonights game be worthy of some of the nail biting encounters of the past."
