From the match programme:
"CLUB NOTES"
"Victory at the Reddings following the fine victory over Ebbw Vale, here at Rodney Parade, have certainly lifted some of the depression that has been evident this season. But skipper Geoff Evans, coach Sid Jeffries and the other members of the selection commjttee are confident that now the walking wounded are reporting for duty, a little light can be seen at the end of the tunnel. They realise that there is still a great deal of work to be done before a settled side can start obtaining consistent results, but the challenge of this afternoons visitors and the Schweppes W.R.U. Challenge Cup round next Saturday, could be the start of something good."
"It was pleasing to see that the injury sustained by Brynmor Williams against Ebbw Vale, was not as serious as first thought and he was able to take his place as a Welsh replacement yesterday. This coupled with the news that vice-captain Gareth Evans, has had the plaster removed from his wrist and should be back in action before the end of the month, has certainly brightened the Rodney Parade scene. It is impossible to mention the Ebbw Vale game, without making reference to the excellent display given by Neil Brown as an emergency scrum half. The selection committee must be the envy of many clubs by having Brynmor Williams, Alun Billinghurst, Roger Clifford, Gareth Powell, Neil Brown and David Rogers (remember London Welsh v Cardiff) to select from."
"Next Thursday, the Monmouthshire Squad under coach Arthur Lewis, will hold a training session at Rodney Parade, before the County team to play Glamorgan on Monday 20th November, is selected. As this is their final game in the build up for the All Blacks encounter here on the 29th November, it is hoped that all our squad members will be selected. Everyone at Rodney Parade wishes them well. Although all stand tickets for the game have been sold, Ground Tickets are still on sale at the Club Office during the day, and at the Social Centre, at night."
"While the 1st team were winning away last Saturday, the United XV under their captain Jim Dale, were delighting the Rodney Parade faithfuls, with an outstanding display of controlled rugby, to defeat the Moseley United XV which contained seven county players, by 27pts to 14pts. To complete a succesful week-end the Youth Team won a hard earned victory over Garnlydon, by 7pts. to Nil."
"WELCOME TO RODNEY PARADE"
"This afternoon we are pleased to extend a warm welcome to Rosslyn Park for their first visit in nineteen years. Formed in 1879, the Park are obviously very busy in making arrangements to celebrate their centenary. Their contribution to English and London rugby has been considerable during their history and on checking through the records the following players who have worn the Red and White-hooped jersey, have also represented their country, E. J. Unwin, Barry Boobbyer, B. A. Neale, C. E. Winn, who has also served the club with great distinction as an administrator, J. A. S. Wackett, J. M. Ranson, Bev. Dovey, Andy Ripley, Peter Warfield, John Scott, now with the enemy down the Newport Road and Bob Mordell."
"This season the Park are having an excellent season under Phil Keith-Roach, who as well as being captain, helps with the coaching of the side. Last Saturday they defeated Oxford University at Ifley Road, by 28pts to 12pts, with wing three-quarters David McKay, showing that he has lost none of his try scoring ability, by crossing the Dark Blues line twice. With the skipper, their most capped international Andy Ripley, and last seasons England debutant Bob Mordell in the pack, they are certain of obtaining the quality possession that centre Peter Warfield requires, as he bids to reclaim his place in the England team."
"The London Counties XV who were convincingly beaten at Twickenham, by Graham Mauries All Blacks, contained three Park players in the persons of Keitn Roath, Bob Mordeil and Peter Warfield. It is certain that they will be looking for a different result this afternoon and hoping that they can write their names in the record books as being members of the first Rosslyn Park team ever to defeat Newport. The clubs first met in the 1951-2 season with the Black and Ambers achieving victory by 16pts to 3pts. In 1953-4 victory was by 16pts to Nil, 1954-5 12pts to 11pts, 1955-6 8pts. to 6pts., 1956-7 9pts to 6pts, 1957-8 a 6pts. all draw at Rochampton, while the last meeting of the clubs took place here at Rodney Parade on the 28th March 1959, with Newport winning by 55pts to 3pts."
"Welcome Rosslyn Park, may this afternoons game contain everything good in rugby football. Please accept our sincere thanks for agreeing to play this afternoon, and avoid clashing with yesterdays Wales v New Zealand game."
