"CLUB NOTES"
" 'Lady Luck' has certainly deserted Rodney Parade this season, and this was certainly shown the week-end before last. Our cup game at Stradey saw the Black and Ambers play excellent rugby only to lose the game through not taking their chances. During the game our vice captain British Lion Gareth Evans received a double fracture of the jaw. This serious injury, his fourth within the last eight months, means that this talented player will not play again this season. If losing at Stradey plus Gareths injury was not enough, British Lions centre David Burcher and full back Chris Webber, were involved in a car crash. While Chris escaped injury free David received serious lacerations and for fortyeight hours there was great concern for his sight. Happily, his eyesight is well and he has been discharged from hospital. Although both these players will be missed, the main concern of everyone at Rodney Parade, is that they quickly regain full health."
"Congratulations must be expressed to Brynmor Williams, on once again being selected as a replacement for last Saturdays International. His form at Llanelli, in front of three of the 'Big 5' certainly showed that he has not given up the fight to obtain the No. 9 jersey in the Welsh team. Tonight is the first time Rodney Parade regulars have had to congratulate the 'Flying Farmer' Ken Davies, on reaching his century of tries for the Newport Club. He joins a very select club, for in the clubs illustrious history only nine previous players have achieved this feat. Well done Ken, may you continue to cross opponents line."
"Last week-end the United made their Annual Tour. Having visited other areas during recent years, they returned to the Island of Jersey, where they have been well received in the past. Due to work commitments a number of players were unable to accompany the team, but it was pleasing to see veterans Ian Barnard and David Rogers going along to help youth players Michael Avery and P. Stokes."
"Congratulations to Jane and Keith Jefferson on 'the birth' of their first child, a daughter, and also to Colin Smart, on his England Trial. Many critics consider him unlucky not to have been selected. It shows he is still in the minds of the selectors and could well win that illusive 'cap' before the season is over."
"WELCOME TO RODNEY PARADE"
"This evening we are delighted to extend a warm Rodney Parade welcome to Bridgend, who are celebrating their Centenary Season. We welcome them to the Centurion Club, and congratulate them on their great contribution to rugby football during the last one hundred years."
"The Blue and Whites under the captaincy of Welsh team captain J. P. R. Williams, had proved up until 'the Freeze' that they were determined to make this a season to remember. They are in contention for the Whitbread Welsh Merit Table and the Western Mail Unofficial Championship while next Saturday they attempt to reach the last eight of the Schweppes W.R.U. Challenge Cup, when they entertain our near neighbours Newbridge. Victory in any of these competitions would certainly put the seal on a memorable occasion. The visit of the All Blacks to the Brewery Field, in their pen-ultimate game, was a tribute to a club who have always endeavoured to play the fifteen man game."
"Everyone at Rodney Parade would like to offer their congratulations to J. P. R. on gaining his 50th cap last Saturday. His contribution to the game has been enormous and he is a household name where ever rugby football is played. Let's hope that he not only leades his club to success during this historic season, but his country to another Triple Crown and Grand Slam (these notes had to be with the printer prior to the Wales v Ireland game)."
"Coaches Billy Griffith and John Lloyd, who both gave great service to the Blue and Whites as players, have produced a team who are determined to run with the ball. As well as J. P. R. the back division contains such fine players as Steve Fenwick, Lyndon Thomas, Viv Jenkins, Ian Lewis, Francome Owen, Alan Rose, Ian Williams and Gerald Williams. Up front Meredith James, Geoff Davies, Ray Evans, Derick Brain and the talented Gareth Williams, ensure that the ball is not only obtained but kept on the move."
"While the players are ensuring the success of the club on the field, the committee under Dr. Williams are determined that this season will be one to be remembered. Special mention must be made to Secretary Durbar Lawrie, who has served the club with distinction for so long. He certainly must be proud of the clubs achievements."
"Welcome Bridgend, may your celebrations continue, with the exception of tonight of course, and long may you continue to visit Rodney Parade."
