"Last season Newport finished with the worst record in their history, a nasty experience, but one which can happen to any club no matter how well organised they are. However, you can't keep a good club down and this season Newport have responded to the leadership of skipper Geoff Evans and promptly beat Penarth 47-6, Coventry 31-22, Bath 13-7 and in mid week Neath 12-6, giving notice that they are back in contention."
"They have recruited several promising young players amongst them 20 year old Alun Watkins, Youth international John Manders and Robert Ackerman who last season played for Christ College Brecon and now finds himself in the Wales 'B' squad. Also in the squad are John Churchill wing and David Waters second row."
"Their leading points scorer this season is Alun Watkins with 39 and the top try scorer is Robert Ackerman with 5."
"Swansea representatives in the 'B' squad for the match against France at the Gnoll are Jeff Herdman and Malcolm Dacey who both receive our best wishes."
"The Swansea club are well satisfied with last Saturdays Overseas match. Roger Blyth stole the limelight scoring a remarkable 24 points. Brynmor Williams also got a try so between them they accounted for 28 of the 32 scored by Wales. Swansea's captain Geoff Wheel and Clive Williams with solid performances up front completed an excellent day. The Overseas team coached by Stan Addicott confirmed the high opinion the WRU have of the Swansea coach."
"Swansea's Welsh international forward Tommy Day passed away this week. He was a great character and it was always a pleasure to be in his company. We offer our sincere condolences to his family."
