"Club Notes"
"Following the great disappointment suffered by everyone at Penclawdd last Saturday, everyone at Rodney Parade would like to extend their congratulations to the Centenary celebrating club and wish them every success in the competition. There is no doubt that last Saturday was not only the highlight of their season, but of their entire history. It has been rumoured that 'Nye' Williams will be made a 'freeman' of the village in honour of the victory. November 15th will certainly live in the memory for a very long time."
"Welcome Paul Rees, who has joined the Club from Ebbw Vale during the last week. A talented player behind the scrum, he realises that Leighton Davies and Alun Watkins have worn the No.15 shirt this season and will need to be at his best to claim the position. We all wish him the best of luck. Our injured players are on the mend, with both Colin Smart and Peter Boland available for selection, which leaves only Keri Williams not available with his broken shoulder."
"With Christmas not very far away and presents very much in everyone's mind, why not take advantage of Father Christmas without his sleigh (Campbell Black) and purchase from the following: Newport R.F.C. Woollen Scarves — Special Offer Price £1.50; Diaries — Special Offer Price 20p; Sweat Shirts-£6.75; T Shirts - £2.50; Sweaters - £9.00; Cloth Badges —75p; Pinnits — 60p."
"Purchase from either the Club Office or Newport's answer to Dr. Barbara Moore."
"Welcome to Rodney Parade"
"This evening we extend a very warm welcome to our visitors from the north of Gwent - Ebbw Vale. During recent weeks they have suffered a change of captaincy, due to their elected captain David Fryer standing down through a nagging shoulder injury and availability problems. He has been succeeded by Gary Lawrence, a player who has given great service to the Ebbw Vale club through his versatility behind the scrum. David has promised his full support to the new captain as soon as he regains full fitness and hopes to impress the 'Big 5' with his talents."
"Two players who can be expected to give the new captain every advice are those two back row stalwarts Phil Gardner and Clive Burgess. These two bounders of outside halves epitomise everything good in rugby football and are a credit to the Ebbw Vale club. It is certain that new 'Ebbw' coach Chris Padfield will lean heavily on their experience as he strives to help the club he once played for back to the top in Welsh rugby."
"When at full strength, Ebbw Vale are a well balanced side with the skipper and his co-centre, Ian Goslin, providing plenty of chances for Des Parry and Wayne Bow, while the return of Nigel Osborne from Pontypool has added a new dimension to their play. Up front the two stalwarts, plus the ageless Gareth Howls, Robert Holmes, Colin Williams, Elwyn Jones and David Fryer, ensure the best traditions of the Red, Green and Whites are maintained."
"Welcome, Ebbw Vale - last season we both won our home games in traditional style: may tonight's game recapture memories of meetings between our two clubs."
