"Club Notes"
"Pride of place this week must go to skipper Geoff Evans on his selection for the Barbarians. It is an honour richly deserved by one of the games gentleman and will not only be applauded at Rodney Parade but every ground throughout Wales, such is his popularity. His contribution to the Newport Club during the last ten years is immeasurable and his record speaks for itself. Since making his debut in 1970 he has made 291 1st XV appearances (not including today's) and has captained the Club on 5 occasions equalling the record set up by W. Phillips in the 1880's. He has toured South Africa twice, America and Canada and captained the Club versus New Zealand in 1973 and 1980. Well done Geoff, you deserve such a Christmas present. We wish you well on the 27th and look forward to you joining the celebrated "300 Club" in the near future."
"This afternoon members and supporters see the debut of Bassaleg schoolboy Stuart Barnes in a Black and Amber 1st XV jersey. He follows in the footsteps of many famous Newport players who commenced their careers at the school and following his polished performances in the National and Snelling Sevens seems destined to reach the top. On the 10th January 1981, he captains the Welsh Schools XV v Yorkshire Schools at Cwmbran, while in March he captains the Gwent Schools Touring Team on their British Columbia Tour. Good Luck Stuart, may you delignt us with your talents for many years to come."
"Welcome to Rodney Parade"
"This afternoon we are pleased to once again welcome our long-standing friends from "North of the Border" the Watsonians. Fixtures between our two clubs commenced in 1894 and except for the two World Wars and a few hiccups the "Watties" have become very much a part of the Festive Season at Rodney Parade."
"Although the last few seasons have seen the team become very inconsistent and on times struggling to maintain their place in the Scottish 1st Division, the "Watties" remain the only 'closed membership' club remaining in Scottish rugby. It is a tribute to George Watson's College that year after year they are able to produce enough talent to ensure the Club can maintain the standard and traditions of the past. During their long and illustrious history the "Sonians" have made a major contribution to Scottish rugby and it is certain that the present committee and players are determined that this will continue."
"One player who has brought honour to Muirside already this season is David Johnston, when he appeared in the combined Scotland/Ireland team who played the Wales/England team in the recent rugby extravaganza at the National Stadium to celebrate the W.R.U.'s Centenary. His speed and flair were prominent as they were for Scotland last season when he must have been very close to selection for the British Isles tour to South Africa."
"Welcome Watsonians, following your victory over Ayr last Saturday, you will be full of confidence of achieving one of your rare victories at Rodney Parade. We appreciate the sacrifices you make by coming to help us celebrate our 'Festive Season' and trust that the quality of the game and the warmth of hospitality in the Club House afterwards will make your journey worthwhile."
"Merry Christmas "Watties" and a "Very Happy Hogmanay"."
