"Club Notes"
"Congratulations must be extended to Colin Smart and Gareth Evans for the further honours they have brought to the Newport Club. Colin extended his international appearances versus Ireland and France, while Gareth re-appeared in the Barbarians' colours in last Wednesday's Mobbs Memorial match."
"While the 1st XV continue to reach the heights and depths in successive weeks, the Youth XV have reached the final of the Welsh Youth Cup where they will play the Youth XV of today's visitors. It is certain to be a game worth watching and lending your support to."

"This afternoon we welcome B.B.C. Wales cameras to Rodney Parade and are confident that both teams will produce a game worthy of displaying all the best things in Welsh Club rugby. Their presence in the past has always proved 'lucky' for the Black and Ambers - let's hope it continues this afternoon."
"Welcome to Rodney Parade"
"This afternoon we extend a very warm Rodney Parade welcome to our near neighbours from the other end of the Newport Road, 'the old enemy' Cardiff, fresh - if anyone can be fresh after playing rugby in such appalling weather conditions - from their titanic victory over Swansea in the semi final of the Schweppes W.R.U. Challenge Cup at Bridgend last Tuesday evening. We offer them our congratulations and are confident that the Final versus Bridgend at the National Stadium on Saturday, 11th April, will be a memorable occasion as both teams strive to carry off the coveted trophy in the W.R.U's Centenary Year."
"Following a disappointing start to the season, the Blue and Blacks have found a great deal of consistency over the last few months under their captain, John Scott. Injuries have robbed the team of many players throughout the season, but such is the strength of the pool of players available at Arms Park that the loss of such players as Terry Holmes, Andrew Teandle, Mike Murphy and Stuart Lane has been overcome. Captain John Scott has proved an inspiring leader, while his play in the No.8 position has been of the highest quality. In outside half Gareth Davies he has a quality player who, although troubled by a niggling injury since returning early from the Lions Tour, has been able to orchestrate the pattern of play and prove an able deputy when he was absent on international duty."
"At the end of the season, Cardiff embarks on another 'safari' when they visit Zimbabwe for a three-weeks tour and it is certain that John Scott would like to take the Challenge Cup with him and also emulate another Englishman - a certain Colin Smart - who held the trophy aloft at Arms Park after achieving victory over Sch - You Know Who! in 1977."
"Welcome, Cardiff - everyone at Rodney Parade is well aware that you are seeking 'the double' and that a great deal of water has passed under Newport Bridge since the last Black and Amber victory, but we are confident that today's teams will provide a game worthy of our two great Clubs and that our friendly rivalry will continue to benefit rugby football in general."
