From the match programme for what was, sadly, the last traditional Easter Tuesday visit of the Barbarians to Rodney Parade :-
"WELCOME TO THE PARADE"
"THIS afternoon we are delighted to once again extend a very warm Rodney Parade welcome to the Barbarians Touring Party under the leadership of their President, Herbert Waddell. Our two clubs commenced fixtures way back in 1893 and, with the exception of the war years, have continued ever since. Throughout that period the fixture has changed its place on the rugby calendar a few times, although it must be stated that it has been part of the Easter Programme here at Rodney Parade since the early 1900s."
"Unfortunately, like everything else, circumstances change and during recent years the Barbarians have been greatly concerned regarding the great difficulties they have experienced in fielding a side in keeping with true Barbarian tradition for the final game of their Easter Tour here at Rodney Parade. Discussions took place between the Committees of both Clubs and agreement was reached that today's fixture would be the last during the Easter period. For the next three years the annual fixture will be played during mid-week at the start of the season, with an evening kick-off and you are requested to make a note of the following dates:-
Season 1982-83 Tuesday, 28th September 1982
Season 1983-84 Tuesday, 4th October, 1983
Season 1984-85 Tuesday, 2nd October, 1984"
"Although tradition will be broken after today, the Barbarian fixture will remain a vital part of our fixture list and the statistically-minded will be anxious to add future results to the following: Played 74, Newport winning 46, the Barbarians winning 25 and 3 games being drawn."
"This Easter the Barbarians have once again selected a very strong party, although Secretary Geoffrey Windsor-Lewis and the selectors were hampered by cup competitions in France and Ireland. Congratulations must be extended to Robert Ackerman and Stuart Barnes on their selection, although it is anticipated that Robert will be wearing Black and Amber this afternoon while Stuart will be travelling 'North' to play for the England Under-23 team tomorrow. The party contains a number of the most exciting runners in British rugby and everyone present will be hoping to see David Johnston, Clive Woodward. Roger Baird, Tony Swift and others displaying their skills."
"To play for the Barbarians is one of the highest honours a player can achieve in the game and listed elsewhere in this programme are the names of Black and Amber men who have helped formulate the illustrious history of the world famous club."
"Welcome President Herbert and your party, long may your visits to Rodney Parade continue and may today's game be worthy of many of the magnificent games of the past played between our two clubs."
"Our 'curtain raiser' this afternoon is for the Newport Schools Under-12 Group, between Caerleon and St. Joseph's, with the winners receiving the Welsh Marine Cup. We hope you will enjoy their enthusiasm for the game and give them every encouragement. Who knows - you could well be watching some stars of the 1990s."
"As the season draws to its climax members and supporters are reminded that today's game is not the last to be played at Rodney Parade this season as Fixture Secretary Robert Atkins has re-arranged the following games to be played here:
Tuesday, 20th April v. Aberavon k.o. 7.15p.m.
Thursday, 22nd April v. Neath k.o. 7.15p.m.
Tuesday, 4th May v. Cross Keys k.o. 7.15p.m."
"In addition, the final of the Whitbread Newport and District Cup Competition will be played at Rodney Parade on Thursday, 29th April, k.o. 7.15p.m."
"Remember the Players' Disco in the Rodney Hall tonight - the Club Open Day on Monday, 3rd May - and the Club Lottery (agents are required and details can be obtained at the Lottery Office). Your support is needed."
