"WELCOME TO THE PARADE"
"THIS AFTERNOON we extend a very warm Rodney Parade welcome to our friends from the West Country, Torquay. Formed in 1875, Torquay have made a great contribution to West Country rugby during their history and are proud that present England Coach Mike Davies, who also had a distinguished playing career for his country in the lock position, commenced his playing career in the Black and White colours of Torquay. Like ourselves, they will be hoping that John Widdicombe, a lock who also commenced his career in the Black and Whites, will go on to obtain top honours for his country."
"During the 1920s Torquay had a great Welsh influence at the Club, including Bob Delehay, who not only performed with great skill for Wales but captained the Club. Another Welsh international produced by Torquay during this period was Tommy Scourfield."
"Our two Clubs have met on 8 previous occasions, with Newport winning 6 games, Torquay 1 and 1 game being drawn - the last occasion being during the 1980-81 season when the Black and Ambers won here at Rodney Parade and scored a half century of points. One person who will be hoping for an improvement today will be ex-Newport prop David Jones (a member of the 1963 team who defeated the All Blacks) who, after coaching the Club for a number of years, is now Chairman of Selectors."
"Welcome, Torquay - this is your second visit to Rodney Parade and we trust that it will produce rugby of the highest quality and that you will return to the West Country with many happy memories and many new friends."
"CLUB NOTES"
"CONGRATULATIONS to our Three Musketeers' - Rhys Morgan, Mike Watkins and Roger Powell - on their selection for the Monmouthshire Squad for next Wednesday's match versus the New Zealand Maoris, here at Rodney Parade. Everyone here at The Parade hopes they come through today's game and tomorrow's final training session, under coach Terry Cobner, unmarked and are selected for next Wednesday's Big Game. If you haven't got yout tickets they will be on sale at the Club Office before and after this afternoon's game."
"The Chairman, Committee and Players wish to thank the Supporters Club for their generous sponsorship of this afternoon's game and for their continued support. Like everyone else at Rodney Parade they must be delighted with our draw in this season's W.R.U. Challenge Cup and we look forward to an extended run in this competition. Let's hope that the 'Picture Gallery' on display in the Members' Lounge will rekindle memories of the great days at Rodney Parade and serve as an inspiration to the present players."
"Members and Supporters are requested to note that our home game versus Rosslyn Park on Saturday, 13th November, will kick off at 11.30 am to avoid clashing with the Wales XV versus New Zealand Maoris at Cardiff in the afternoon. On Tuesday next, 2nd November, a New Zealand Evening is being held in the Rodney Hall, when many groups of Maoris' supporters will be present to hear entertainment provided by the Newport Mate Voice Choir and Alun Williams. It is hoped that Waka Nathan, the New Zealand Maoris' Manager, and those players not playing the next day will be in attendance. Waka will need no reminding that the only game he lost while playing in an All Black jersey was here at Rodney Parade in 1963."
