From the match programme:
"WELCOME TO THE PARADE"
"This afternoon we extend a very warm welcome to Richmond, who are making their first appearance at Rodney Parade since January 1958 when the Black and Ambers, led by Leighton Jenkins, defeated Richmond by 28pts to Nil. Fixtures between our two clubs discontinued after the game at Richmond on 24th January 1959 when the Black and Ambers, led by Bryn Meredith, were victors by 8pts to Nil."
"Richmond, who were formed in 1861, have made a tremendous contribution to English rugby and have provided many players who have worn the All White jersey emblazoned with the Red Rose. Their most capped player is Charles Ralston, who made 22 appearances for England and wore the Old Gold, Red and Black with great pride."
"Our visitors first appeared on a Newport fixture list in November 1888 when the Black and Ambers, led by Theo Harding, won by 1 goal to Nil. Since that date our two clubs have met on 27 occasions with Richmond winning 5 games, Newport winning 20 games and 2 being drawn. Richmond have only won once here at Rodney Parade and it is certain that today's team will be anxious to emulate the 1926 team when they defeated Harold Davies' Newport team by 16pts to 9pts."
"Welcome, Richmond ? we are confident that your victory last Saturday over Moseley will ensure that today's game will live up to all those exciting encounters between our two clubs in the past."
"CLUB NOTES"
"Since our last home game our captain, Michael J. Watkins, has led Wales to victory over England at Twickenham to the delight not only of the Rodney Parade faithfuls but Welsh people everywhere. Congratulations Michael, we are confident that your success will continue on 7th April when you lead Wales versus the W.R.U. Presidents' World XV in the game arranged to mark the official opening of the newly designed Cardiff Arms Park. But the captain is not the only Newport player who has received honours during recent weeks ? Rhys Morgan and David Waters made their Barbarian debuts versus East Midlands, while Colin Ferns of our Youth XV has played for the England Colts XV versus Italy and today is playing versus the Welsh Youth XV. Congratulations are extended to these three players from everyone at Rodney Parade."
"This afternoon the 1st XV commence a very busy 8 days and Members and Supporters are reminded to note in their Newport RFC Diaries the following fixtures, all to be played here at Rodney Parade: Monday 26th March v. Aberavon, K.O. 7pm; Wednesday 28th March v Penarth, K.O. 7pm; Saturday 31st March v. Neath, K.O. 3pm. It has been rumoured that 'Charlie' Faulkner has threatened the players with a training session if they fail to produce the goods."
"Phil Parker is back in training after his facial injury, but the news on Phil Steele, Andy Phillips, Nigel Callard and Colin Smart is not as encouraging. The first three look like being side-lined for the remainder of the season, while Colin is still experiencing difficulties with his ankle. Everyone at Rodney Parade wishes them well and hopes the 'injury bug' will bypass us in the future."
