From the match programme:-
"WELCOME TO THE PARADE"
"Having employed their fitness and skills at the Rugby Olympics and Sevens' Tournament here at Rodney Parade and Cardiff H.S.O.B's, the players commenced the season by visiting Resolven last Monday to help that Club commence their Centenary Season. This game gave them the opportunity of displaying the benefits of all the hard training sessions they have endured under Tony Faulkner and Roy Duggan during the "hot summer months". Congratulations must be extended to Michael J. Watkins on his election for a third successive season as 1st XV captain, to Keith James after all his service to the Club as United captain, and to Michael Torjeson as Youth captain. Everyone at Rodney Parade hopes they will all lead very successful and happy teams, and that the style of rugby produced will be typical Black and Amber."
"This evening we open our Rodney Parade season by extending a very warm welcome to our friends from 'Donkey Island', Penarth. For many years they were our traditional opening opponents here at Rodney Parade and will be anxious to wipe out the memory of last season's visit when their defeat by 98pts to Nil gave us our highest victory since our inauguration. During the close season, officials at the Athletic Ground have worked tremendously hard to renovate the Club and everyone in Welsh rugby hopes their efforts will be rewarded."
"Later this year the Black and Ambers will be honoured to play host to the visiting Fijians here at Rodney Parade, and there is no doubt they will return with happy memories of their last visit, when they were involved in a highly exciting and entertaining game versus Monmouthshire. They have been on a pre-warm-up tour to Australia and, although they lost both Tests 52-22 and 31-9, there is no doubt they will prove exciting and add another colourful page to Black and Amber history on the 30th October, 1985."
