"WELCOME TO THE PARADE"
"THIS AFTERNOON we extend a very warm welcome to our friends from just over the border, Gloucester. The Cherry and Whites have already encountered Gwent opposition twice this season and suffered defeat on both occasions. They were defeated at Pontypool Park earlier this month, while on Wednesday evening Ebbw Vale travelled to Kingsholme and returned home with a 9-7 victory. Following their success of last season, Gloucester were hoping that this season would see the team to the forefront of Anglo-Welsh Club rugby. Unfortunately, due to a variety of reasons, Malcolm Preedy, the England international who captains the Cherry and Whites, and his team have been unable to sustain any kind of consistency. They have played 13 games and only won 4, although the Black and Ambers should be aware that Swansea only escaped defeat at Kingsholme through the home club missing several kickable penalties. Scrum half Marcus Hannaford is included in the England squad who will travel to Portugal in a few weeks' time. He will be hoping that his captain and fellow England international No.8 Mike Teague will provide enough ball with their fellow forwards for him to demonstrate his skills this afternoon. Another talented player in the person of England 'B' wing Richard Mogg will be looking for try scoring opportunities. Former outside half Bob Redwood is the current Club Coach and together with former Gloucester stalwarts Peter Ford, Micky Booth, Mike Nicholls, Jim Jarrett and Alan Brinn, current Committee-men, will no doubt inform today's Cherry and Whites that they last achieved a victory over the Black and Ambers on 17th October 1981 (19-Nil), while the records show that the last time they won here at Rodney Parade was on 20th October 1978 (16-9)."
"With both Clubs struggling to find any kind of consistency during the opening months of this season, this afternoon's game is of great importance and, in welcoming Gloucester, we are confident that the game will produce rugby football of the highest quality."
"Following our fine victory at The Welfare Ground, Newbridge last Saturday, the atmosphere with members and supporters, as they travelled the same Western Valley road last Wednesday evening, was entirely different following our defeat and dismal display at Abertillery Park. Let's hope that 'MJW' and his team can erase the memory by their performance this afternoon."
